Ok , I just got my new Ro/di system from air water and ice, great company to deal with. Marisa is a god send. Plus since I am a girs member I got a whole replacement filter cartridge pack for a buck plus 10% percent off. Great deal.
My question to anyone who lives in the north liberty area . Are your TDS readings near 800? I can't believe mine are this high. No wonder the water smells/tastes so bad. I got the hurricane with the permeate pump so I can run ro water to the fridge because its so bad.
Would love to see other peoples ro/di system TDS reading on the water going in, doesn't have to be from North Liberty either, Thanks Guys.

I"ve got a in-line TDS unit but I guess I have never monitored the incoming water there really is nothing you can do about it. I monitor the TDS level on the water coming out of the RO unit into the DI resin and out of the DI resin to monitor filter performance. I"m trying to think back and I think our incoming water was around 300TDS but we also run a whole house filter on the line comming into the house that uses a 20 micron sediment filter. We have a lot of rust in the water up here the filter turns orange after a couple months.
FYI the smell comes from sulfur in the water the carbon filter will take care of that. Is it a faint rotten egg like smell?

You are on City Water? It sounds like you are on a well. I am on a Well and mine use to smell, but after the people on my road got upgraded to City water my Well is not smelling anymore..I had just built my house so city let me keep my brand new well. Anyway if your on a well shock it if not its your pipes, because City water is treated and should not smell like that. Most of the smell is Sulfer as OW said.

Anyways the TDS is high on my Well to, Because I only care what the water coming out is. So I have never check it. That's very hard water

I moved from N. Liberty to Cedar Rapids last month.
In N. Liberty, my TDS was always at or above 1,000 - we lived in a newer edition called Goose Lake Circle (behind Education Station, Zios, Mercy Care).  I was always battling nuisance algae and had a tough time keeping vibrant colors in my SPS.  Using a 5-stage RO/DI my TDS would be in the low teens with fresh filters.  Figuring output water @ 97 - 99% pure this would be about right based on my source.
I used my TDS in various places to determine if it was giving accurate readings.  TDS in Cedar Rapids is approx 200 and in the last month I've noticed major differences in coloration and nuisance algae.
    Good luck!

I just bought a TDS meter and was playing around to see what readings I got. Our tap water in Urbandale was 140 - 170. Brita filtered water showed around 70. My parents house (built around 1960) in West Des Moines showed 450.
