Does it sound like it's plausible, the bulb is super old, could it be causing all the brown "algae" growing in my tank? I use RO/DI water and also Instant ocean saly....any help welcomed

Any idea how old it is? Or possibly the spectrum of the bulb? It's very possible for the bulb to be growing more algae. Most times when the lower k spectrum bulbs get past their prime then end up more like the 6.5 k spectrum which is perfect for growing.

It is OLD, ran it for a year way back in the day, and then my dad definitely used it on a freaking Guppy tank for a solid year....so it's probably in that range, next question, there is SOOOOO much lighting out there, I don't even know where to start with LEDs, just looking for a solid top mounted unit that would be good for SPS in case I ever get that advanced....

I know alot of people have great looking tanks with led. Alot of those fixtures are the Chinese ones like reef breeders or ocean revive and a few more. Personally I like t5 i run them on all my tanks. I never had good experience with led but everyones setup is different. But it's hard to beat a good old metal halide fixture to unless heat is a problem.
And yes old bulbs will help fuel algae growth and the spectrum shifts and coral color will suffer also. Just be careful when you switch light in or bulbs cause you will shock your corals and possibly bleach them. When I do a bulb change on my 8 bulb fixture I usually do 2 bulbs every 3-5 days and raise my fixture up an inch or 2 so everything can acclimate.

Right now I don't really have any corals in there, just a single mushroom polyp and Zoanthid. I'm really thinking LED is the way I want to go, my tank does have heat issues, not bad, but I would love to not have to get a chiller.

Any help picking out a fixture would rock, I'm not super into the idea of a hanging unit, would like a tank mounted.... So where should I start?

Well post what size and dimensions of your tank, what corals are you looking to keep and a price range. There are plenty of mounting options like rail kits and tank mounts or make your own. Maybe some led people will help you out cause they have way more experience than I do.

24 gal aquapod right now, and wanting a few Monti-caps and zoanthids, maybe an LPS or two, nothing too fancy....Budget is at the 200ish range

I always thought the aquatic illuminations hydra 52 or eco tech radion pro were the best LEDs out there until I started researching them more. You should look into kessils, the best light they have out right now would be the a360w-e. It's about $400, cheaper than the other "high end" LEDs. They have the best spectrums out of all the fixtures, they produce their own LEDs in house, American company, only true uv led out there, and they have a really slick gooseneck mount. It's the light I have over my biocube which would roughly the same size as yours. If you look up any recent threads with lighting experts that have tried out all other brands they all highly recommend kessil. When switching from metal halide they're about as close to the same "feel" in an led fixture you can get.

If I were to do my lighting over again, knowing what I know now I wouldn't buy LED.

I had 4 sol blues over the tank and wasn't happy. Added T5s to supplement and it was much better, but decided to try the latest in LED. Went to hydras, and while the coloration is better, I still don't think everything likes just LEDs.

I have 4 AI sol blues and 4 hydras over the tank currently. Plenty of light and nothing is getting bleached, I just don't think everything is as happy as it should be, or as I would like it. I would really love to try Kessils for awhile, but would hate to be dissappointed yet again. Thinking about just selling most of the LEDs and going back to the tried and true MH with some led or T5 supplement. Still the best tanks I have ever seen have MH fixtures hanging over them.

I'm thinking for the time being I'm going to keep my Halide, get a new 14k bulb for it, and then save up for an LED next year, to see if I like em.
Which brings me to a new question...
My Sunpod 150w has two little panels with 6 LEDs on each, 3 blue and 3 white, for dusk/morning/shimmer/blah blah/ effects. Does anybody know if I could retrofit new LEDs in there replacing the old ones and if I would have to upgrade the wires in there? Guess I don't know what the wattage of the existing ones are, but if I could get better ones to help with coral growth or coloration, that would be my goal...ideas? Yes I'm very green at this, and I have no experience with doing electrical work /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif
