While my dry rock is cooking in the basement I decided today that I wasn't real happy with the small fuge I put in my sump... So I opened up my stand and pulled the sump..... On the way back into the stand it slid and cracked the end glass.... So my question is how hard is it to replace glass in the end of a 30 gal?  Been one of those days.......

Proablly have to pull the trim off, and then cut the silicone that hold the glass in place, then get another piece that size and silicone it back in. Doesn't sound hard, just sounds time consuming.

How far up is cracked? You might be able to put a piece of acrylic over the crack and put some silicone on it. I have seen this fix but not sure if they are the best fix.

Well, I had the glass in the end of my 75 gallon sum break (I was trying to drill it and it's tempered...whoops!!!) and here's what I'm doing. I removed the top trim and during the process, I broke it...so I ordered a new one. I'm getting a new piece of glass cut to fit from Iowa Glass, then, use a bunch of silicone and get the fit as close as you can while allowing for a thin layer of silicone between the panes (like paper thin if possible) It's all dependent on how exact they can cut the glass for you. Silicone the new trim on and you're done.

Another approach is to put another piece of glass along the inside and silicone it to the other cracked pane. Personally, I think this looks messy and I would never do that, but it is easier than removing the trim and replacing the whole pane.

If you're interested, I have two panes of 17.5" x 24" 1/4" glass that's not tempered. Since you're a club member, I'll happily give on one if you want. Let me know.

Another option, which is proablly not the cheapest, but possibliy the easiest is to go buy another 30, and then fix the 30 you broke.

Well, consider the cost of silicone ($8), new trim ($15) and getting someone to cut the glass ($5), even if you get the glass free, you're talking close to $30.

To get the trim off, I pulled the glass out, then I used a dremel to cut it. Once you have one edge that you can pull on, the rest comes much easier. I've heard of some people that can get it off intact using a long razor blade along the glass. I've never been successful with that.

Well I got the glass out(not as hard as I thought it would be)....left the trim on and intack. I will be able to slidethe glass up into the top trim and if it lowers a hair that will be fine...AJ p'ming you on your offer of glass

Well after AJ hooked my up with a piece of glass, the wife cut it for me. And of couse I had her cut it 1/8 to long.. so after she routered it down, the dry fit was great.... Got it all siliconed in on Sunday night. I let it air dry till tonight.  She is holding water...Yea Me!... will let it set till the end of the week with water in it to make sure all is good before it goes back into my stand.... Thanks Again AJ

Glad it worked out for you.  You can pass some of your gratitude on to Chris Koeppel as he is the person I got it from to begin with.  I used what I needed for my baffles in my sump, and that was 1/2 of the excess.  Glad it did the trick.

And you can repay the kindness by posting a build thread and showing us how your progressing...always love to see a good build thread. :)
