I hijacked the other thread with ozone discussion. Lets start it for real over here.

Regarding Calfo's advice to me about using Ozone.....

Flame away but what he told me was to get a cheap ozone machine on ebay....$40 search 'ozone aquarium' over at ebay and you will see the machines. They are from hong kong. Ignore all conventional advice about filtering the ozone through carbon and just drop the air hose in your sump.

I am planning on doing this although I admit I am a little nervous about it. I do not have a ORP monitor and I really don't want to buy one. My controller does not have a slot for one taboot. I have 350 gallons of water total in the system to buffer.

I am open to advice on this subject. Anyone have experience with ozone? Did you filter it? Or did you drop it in 'raw'?

I heard the off gassing of ozone was toxic to humans?!?! In my skimmer manual, it has a special hookup for ozone injection and calls for the air coming out of the collection cup to be filtered through carbon before being released into your home's air. I'll check out my skimmer manual again when I get home to elaborate on this more.

I have never tried ozone and don't know much about it, this is just what my manual says. I am by no means any expert, this is all I have to offer!

Like I said in the other thread, I have never used it in my tanks. The main reason for the carbon, in my opinion, would be to prevent it from escaping into your house, which can be a bad thing if you are pumping it out 24/7. The other concern I have is if the redox value of the water gets too high nasty things start to happen, such as hydrochloric and hydrobromic acid, basicaly bleach.

That being said, if you can control and monitor it, I would think the benefits would be pretty big...

Also, not ozone specific, I've always loved the saying, "Never put anything in your tank you can't test for."

Those small ozonizors are very small, you shouldnt have to worry about over doing it into your tank. I would start out with it on a timerfor 5 minutes an hour & slowly increase it.
Ozone is already found in every day household appliances. Have you ever been around an electric train set? That smell from the engine is Ozone. Also when you use a mixer, blender, any lights with a ballast.
Have you seen those indoor air purifiers?  All they do is put ozone in the air in your home.
A good precaution is to have a large air exchange in your home.  Either have an air exchanger built in (code in all new homes).  Another way to circulate indoor/outdoor air is to leave your bathroom fan run more.  Takes indoor out causing a vacuum to bring in fresh air when you open an outside door.

I can't imagine doing it without have an ORP probe. But then again I have read that ORP probes are not accurate over time. I am thinking of trying it myself in the next few months but will be very cautious as I have been told and have read of crashes.

I've been reading the owners manuals on commercially available ozone machines for the reefer. From all that I am reading it is suggesting 5-15 units? of ozone per 25 gallons of water. Further, you need higher ozone units? if you have a heavily stocked tank. I agree to start slow on a timer and then increase it over time. I will probably get a ORP probe just because I am a totally obsessed with water quality. Although it appears that dosing ozone with this tiny ebay machine 24/7 in my large tank would not significantly increase ORP. It would be pumping out 3-5 ozone units per hour. Which I'm thinking is adequate for what I want an ozone machine for. That is to prevent problems instead of solve existing ones.

I started looking to this a little after reading the other thread that it got brought up in. So Calfo was saying all you need is something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Ozone-Generator-Aquarium-Purifier-Ozonizer-Air-Pump-AP-/250723383811?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a60473a03#ht_4174wt_907

Ouch on the ORP probe price! Specially when you hear things on them not lasting long and such.

One other thing to keep in mind that I had forgotten is that Ozone is supposedly hard on plastics such as impellors and seals. There are discussions of early failures of pumps using ozone that has caused severe problems.

So if you are going to run Ozone is it best to go full blown or will you see benefits going with the small amounts? I think if I decide to do it I will still get a probe to monitor and program something in as a fail safe in case something does go wrong. I also interested in the best way to supply it to the tank. My skimmer has no true input for it. Is it worth trying to go this route if I can DIY a way to inject it into the skimmer? It sounds like most people use a reactor of some sort. I have done some light reading but not any deep reading on the subject. I hope we can all learn together on this and go from there.

That is exactly the model I think I was directed to. He told me to ebay 'aquarium ozone' and they are 'on there for $30 or $40'
I have a habit of taking apart EVERYTHING I own. Surprisingly, I just learned that I have several ozone machines in my home that I completely overlooked. I have one in my hot tub, one in an air purifier, and one in my toilet seat (ha ha) But it is true: I have a Toto S300 bidet and one of the features is an ozonator to destroy foul odors.
So I took all of these things apart and the insides are incredibly simple. Some sort of ballast device, an air generator (small pump), a few wires and a ozone bulb. That is it. All the units are rated between 100-200 units?....same as this ebay one. I gotta believe the one on ebay is chinese made crap that will totally work.

I am not going to advocate this since I have no experience with dosing ozone. But Calfo says drop the air hose into your sump and let it rip. I also read about carbon filtration, protein skimmer filtering, etc.
Also just because I trust no one I did research on Calfo. Seems like a great guy. Of course there was all kinds of slanderous stuff out there, much of it quite humerous, but overall I trust him. Just not enough to drop straight ozone. I plan on emailing him. Does anyone know his email address? You can PM me if you don't want to make it public. I also want to get him a part to a food processor he bought from me if that makes this request more legit.
