Ya this hobby is full of Drama,  I could keep you entertained for hours on dirt & gossip.
I am sure he also told you to monitor your ORP or to use your ozonizer plugged into an orp controller.

He probably did tell me that stuff. But then again I was so in awe of actually talking to 'the Michael Jordan of Reefkeeping' (as I told my girlfriend) that I didn't HEAR him. (That is why I wanted to email him as well)

I first heard to monitor my ORP from you my friend. (This ORP controller is news to me)

I've been researching this more and I will need to drop about $250 beyond the cheap ozone generator to do this right. (ORP probe, controller, air dryer, deccasssent, extra deccassent) I'm going to go for it I think. This winter is all about water quality for me.

Ozone is a good thing you just want to remember a few things. You must use a GOOD Air Dryer on the input of you ozone, If the air has moisture in it you will just be wasting your time. It is also best to run the out put into your skimmer, so the ozone has a chance to deplete itself in the chamber.
    Just my two cents!![IMG]

From what I have read though you have to be careful doing this though because some skimmers will start degrading with direct Ozone injection so check with the manufacturer first.  Also I have read things about ozone making skimmers tempermental and a little harder to get set just right.

Good point! but I think that for the most part most of your better skimmers are made out of cast acrylic and I don't think it has much of an effect on it, but yes check with your manufacture to play it safe![IMG]

Alright some time has passed and I am curious if anyone has done anything with this?

I am days away from being ready to go. I can now measure ORP. I have the Ozonator generator, air dryer, etc. It is all hooked up. I am just waiting on Avast to send me a new Ozone reactor and I will have news to report. You can see their new reactor over at reefbuilders. I was going to go with the one from Precision Marine but decided against it once I got ahold of Justin Casp at Avast and he talked me into getting their new reactor.

The new Avast reactor is what made me bring this topic back up. What type of Ozone Generator and dryer did you go with?

I bought the ozonator poseidon (BRS) and ozonoator air dryer. Kinda spendy but after much research it seems this is the best brand you can buy for many reasons.

I am kinda surprised that BRS started selling the Enaly brand of ozone generator. Enaly is Chinese and I quit buying Chinese electronics a long time ago (if possible).

I have had the ozone system up and running for about two months now. The system consists of a posidon jr ozone generator, luft air pump, ozone air dryer, avast ozone reactor, avast carbon scrubber, and Mag 5 pump. Quite an extensive and expensive system for sure.

Overall I am happy with how it is going. My water is always crystal clear.....always. That is the big upside.

I monitor ORP and that seems to go real well. The apex shuts the ozone system on and off accordingly. I don't know what else to say about it. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Bringing this thread back from the dead....anyone else added ozone since this has been discussed? Jim, can you give an update on how things have been going? Also, do you use biopellets in conjunction to ozone? I've read that ozone can kill some of the bacteria that the biopellets are feeding...thus, you want to make sure that you have an established colony before introducing ozone if you plan to use them in conjunction with one another. Others say to not use them together at all. Were there any changes to your system overall? Increase/decrease in skimmate? Impact to other parameters? Have you seen any of your plastic components indicate signs of breakdown? And since you're using an ozone reactor, you just pump your water right into the sump and not into your skimmer, right? Very interested to hear how this has been going for you.

I've been up and running for just under a year.

There doesn't really seem to be a decrease in algae on the glass.......I think that is more a problem with me overfeeding.

My water clarity is another issue. It is ALWAYS like glass. It looks like my fish are floating on air. It basically looks like your tank looks when you put in a fresh batch of carbon or run a polishing wheel on a canister filter. Crystal.

The skimmate did reduce some for sure. I only have to clean my collection cups every couple weeks. I added a skimmate locker at the same time. The locker mostly catches runoff water from when my skimmers temporarily go nuts and overflow their cups. It also shuts them down.

I run the ozone like this: luft air pump pushing air to an air dryer with dessicant inside. The dry air continues to my ozone generator. The ozone rich air is then fed via a venturi into an ozone reactor, where it is combined with tank water. It leaves the reactor, and enters a carbon scrubber (carbon reactor). Finally, the ozone rich and carbon scrubbed water enters directly into my sump. It never sees the skimmer. And my plastic/acrylic all seem unaffected.

What else? Oh, my ORP probe contols when the ozone goes off and on. I shut it off at 390 ORP and turn it on when it is under 360. I have only had it creep into the 400's, and a water change brings it all back down.

I don't run biopellets.....I bought a nitrate reactor (sulphur reactor) a few years back and it just runs flawlessly so I have seen no reason to switch to the bio pellets really.

Well, I'll be setting up ozone here in the next few days. I got a great deal on RC on some used gear that was in good condition (all except the shoddy worksmanship of the Cleartides Ozone reactor). Ozotech Poseiden 303 (same as the 200, but has an integrated, pressurized air pump), Cleartides O300 ozone reactor, and some DIY air dryers and 2 ORP probes - all for under $300 shipped. I'll be feeding water off my main return pump and using my existing BRS carbon reactor. Hopefully I can get it set up by the end of the week. I think I'll have to replace the ozone reactor in the near future, but it should do for now. We'll see!
