Looking for the general consensus here. With the vivarium I'm doing, I was planning on using the holes that were drilled in the bottom of the tank for a water feature. Now, due to time issues, I won't be able to fully maintain a water feature in the viv. Would it be okay just to silicone a piece of acrylic over them? I'm aware that silicone doesn't adhere well to acrylic, but I figured I'd at least give it a shot!

Is the tank glass or acrylic? If it's glass you could either silicone in a piece of glass or better yet put bulkheads in the holes and cap them. If the tank is acrylic use some weld-on and patch the holes.

Water features on vivs are a bit of a burden. If done properly they look awesome, if not they become unsightly rather quickly.

Sweet man, thanks! I think bulkheads may end up being my best bet, due to the tank being glass. I'm planning on getting the holes plugged up and FINALLY getting everything planted. Been a long time coming, now!

I got an old 150 with holes in the bottom that cracked because it was tempered. I siliconed in 2 pieces of acrylic on top off the holes and used it as a sump with no leaks.

I've never experienced or heard of tempered glass cracking and not turning into a million pieces immediately

Yeah I got it from a guy who said he got it from a pet store that tried to drill it. You could tell it wasn't factory drilled holes because of their size and location but non the less the bottom did crack and not shatter. Now all I was trying to state is if all you're doing is patching them for a vivarium it would work. We are talking about a viv not an aquarium that would have to hold pressure.I don't know if you have an open top stand or solid but bulkheads stick thru about an inch or two(depending on size) so keep that in mind.

I think what I'm going to do it either invert the bulkheads and plug them, or get a small piece of glass and silicone it into place over top of the holes. Either way, it shouldn't be too hard! Thanks for the replies everyone!

patching with acrylic would be much quicker, easier, cheaper than bulkheads, and you wont have to worry about the lip sticking out from the bottom of the tank
