I have no issues with petco, bought many fish with 90% survival (no corals, that would be a waste of money). Also bought many fish and corals from LFS in Maquoketa, Manchester, Waterloo, Madison, CR and QC

Petco is like KMart, the store is not nice, they have a selection of basic things and their prices are low because they sell lower end and common goods. I view the nicer LFS more like Nordstroms or another high end department store. You get a knowledgable salesperson, they have more exotic/rare things, and the stores themselves are often pretty nice. Nobody drives an hour and a half to go check out Petco.

I've seen Petco's tanks crash, I've also seen LFS with tank crashes and algae outbreaks. The difference is the local stores try to fix the problem immediately and mitigate the losses where Petco Employees call the repair company and wait for them to send out a tech (Which to me is crazy, considering they are stocked full of pumps and heaters, but their employees are not Hobiests). Sometimes it could take weeks for Marineland or whoever to send a repair guy out and the livestock is decimated.

I guess I'm cold hearted, but I really don't consider the Humane Treatment of Fish in the equation. I do not believe any retailer intentionally damages their merchandise to render it un-saleable.
For what Petco is, I think they are OK.
