Petco where the pets go... except SW fish

Seems even on the sales they don't keep a large selection.

 

Oddly enough I had the same thoughts yesterday. I picked up some bartlett's anthias for a great price yesterday. Had never seen them there before, just the occasional lyretail. Everything else was picked over completely. The aquatics employee said their usual customers had no idea what those anthias were as they usually don't order them and that's why they were left. He told me they have a guy that comes in and buys a lot every sale he thinks to sell in his own fish store. He wouldn't tell me who though, but I have my suspicion. From speaking to him he said every Friday when the new fish come in, there is a handful of people there that buy them almost as they are unboxing them. I was there probably 5 hours after the shipment came in and all that was left were those anthias and then the usual stuff they always have in, damsels, clowns, yellow tangs. Also, the dragon wrasse's they carry for some unknown reason, no one ever seems to want them and they sit for weeks. Probably because 95% of petco customers won't have tanks big enough for them.

 

That's crazy, I can't believe someone would go in there and buy their fish for their own store! You don't have to "out" them here but what Petco location do you experience this at?

I was at the Jordan Creek one. He didn't specify where this mysterious seller was from, but as I said I have my suspicion. On couple occasions I've been to this local pet store a day or two before and saw their stock. I went to Petco on a Friday right as the shipments came in to try and get something more interesting than a brand new shiny damsel. Bought my stuff and then a couple days later went back to the local store on their "shipment" day and I'm 99% positive I've seen the same fish stocked there. One time for sure, it was a platinum clown with a mutation, an extra dorsal fin and distinctive marking. Another time I saw the same carpenters wrasse with a unique pattern that I had almost bought myself at Petco. At the time I thought, meh maybe someone bought them and decided it didn't work in the tank and this place gave store credit or something to take fish. Then I heard about this from Petco and it made sense.

That is the only reason I ever look/shop at Petco, occasionally you come across items that are ridiculously priced in the customers benefit!

 

I got the derasa clam btw, or at least one of them. Was only 1 when I was there. I am not thrilled at supplemental feeding a 2 inch clam until it grows but at that price I couldnt resist.

 

Sounds like they should discretely change their shipment date to a Wednesday or so, so that way "resellers" don't get the jump on other consumers. Then again the product is getting sold immediately so it's no longer their responsibility to maintain in those tiny tanks where they're likely to get sick or die.

This sort of thing is pretty prevalent in markets with limited quantities of a high demand item. Wal-Mart deals with resellers every day.

But holy moly $24 for a deresa is awesome.

 

Yeah couldnt pass it up. Got it acclimated and checked over and seems to be doing well. Never had a derasa before just a maxima that I traded away a few months ago.

adams or sea scapes? why beat around the bush. I would bet on sea scapes, I already think its a little BS he is aloud to "trade" with central campus for their anems and fish yet the public cant go in there and buy it.

 

Agreed bladerunner and to change focus back onto saltwater at Petco, here's what I saw at the Mason City store today. I just laughed and walked out after the employees gave me a similar story "just come back on the day our orders come in"
