Advice? Phytoplankton

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by John Paul Madlos, Sep 15, 2016.

  1. I am considering dosing a little phytoplankton to my system to boost the pod population. Any good advice where to buy some to start with? or good brand you had experience with? Thanks

    Here is my quick opinion.

The pods in your system are usually benthic, which means they live in the substrate and live rock. They eat waste, detritus, and algae growing on things. They normally do not eat free flowing phyto.

The pods that eat free phyto are pelagic, meaning they swim around in the water all the time. These are rarely found in aquarium life as they get filtered out.

Now if you want, you can buy concentrated phyto from Reef Nutrtion or Algagen, they are the two best companies.

You can try to grow your own, but then you have to have a constant light, fertilizer, etc.

I have just recently started adding phytoplankton in my biocube. Just for the hell of it. I wanted to see if I could see a difference. Honestly I will not buy anymore. It's been over a month. I haven't noticed any difference.

  4. I dont have a big fuge or tank. The tank size is 10 gallon with aquaclear 110 which can almost hold additional 2 gallons. Huh didnt know that about pods. I have never seen any pelagic pods or mysid shrimps in my tank. I also dont have any corals or nps that eat phyto. Maybe if i find a good deal, maybe ill it someday. Thanks xroads and jeremy.

I have been culturing my own for 16 years now, not hard to do and at all so if you decide you want to go that route I will give you some to get you started.
