I had been using a new plastic swing arm type hydrometer. I knew there was a chance it was inaccurate. Actually I was pretty sure it was since I couldn't get the same result if I tested multiple times in a row. I just received my refractometer in the mail yesterday, and my hydrometer was off by 6 points. I was measuring 1.021 to 1.023 with it, and the refractometer shows, 1.016. So obviously I'll be slowly bringing that up, and ditching the hydrometer....
Just a caution for others, Pam

    LOL,

Yep, probably one of the most important tools you can buy.

You would get better results tasting the water for salinity than using a hydrometer. That being said, make sure you calibrate your refractometer every time you use it.

Why would you calibrate it every time?? I have used a crapy hydrometer for years but I knew exactly how much it was off. I just got a refractometer so don't know much about them. But it seems strange that you would calibrate it every time, It's not like the screw is going to turn itself.

I tend to check mine every other time and it seems to be off slightly after a while. I believe it being bumped around throws things off a little.

Exactly what gered said. Every other time it needed calibrating. So I don't take any chances and calibrate it every time. It is so easy.

Stupid question probably... how do you calibrate a refractometer? Do I just make sure that pure RO reads as 0?

Or use calibration fluid and calibrate it to whatever the fluid is. That's what I do...but I don't calibrate as often as these guys do. But that's just me.

Gered - weren't you having some problems with the calibration fluid??  What did you end of finding out about that?
