Just curious who has gone with Schd 80 PVC over Schd 40 in there systems and why. Hoping to have a custom sump built and am starting to think about the plumbing side of things. The nice thing about schd 40 is it is commonly available and easy to get ahold of. Schd 80 has some availability locally and I am really liking the CEPEX True Union Ball Valves they have. Will cost substaintially more to do it out of 80 but if it is worth the extra I may go for it.

You can mix 40 and 80, the difference is the wall thickness and thus inner diameter. The outer diameter is the same on both. Personally there is no need for 80 anywhere, even unions. You can get true union valves at big box stores if you look enough but the Cepex valves are very, very high quality so I can't argue with their use.

What I was hoping to hear. Found some schd40 true unions for about $10 ea versus the $20-30 ea for the Cepex or Spears brand. This will help save a bit of cash as it was going to get super pricey to use all schd 80.

I am a plumber and we very rarely use schedule 80 pvc. Really the only time we us it is if we are installing Sch 80 CPVC for chemical lines. Schedule 80 for regular pvc is typically used for high pressure applications. Since pvc glue is not real good for long amounts of time under high pressure, pvc isn't really a viable option.

The only place I have used sch 80 is for some of my bulkheads. I'm more comfortable with the deeper threads when I install them on my tank. Seems to bite just a little more securely...the rest of the plumbing is sch 40

I use a lot of schedule 80 because it is hard to find all the different pieces of schedule 40 in dark grey. If you don't mind white plumbing then stick with schedule 40. As for the Cepex or George Fischer valves, they are of higher quality for sure. They are worth having because you can make very small adjustments to them and the valve will not seize on you.

Instead fo starting a new thread figured I would bump this with a new question.

I've got a 220g RR here and having a custom sump built. I will be using a Mag 24 for my return. Will the stock overflows handle the flow I'm guessing at with head loss probably 1800 gph or so at most once I figure in UV and CO2 reactors plus the fittings inline. I could always turn all 4 bulkheads into drains and combine them into 1.5" under teh stand on each side
