I live in an area with very stable electricity. We have been here 25 years now. Cable lines are all underground. Until this spring we never, ever had a problem with the power being off more than 1 hour - and I could probably count on one hand the number of times that was even the case.

Well, in early spring we lost power - for 6 hours. Now, in the last 8 days, we have lost power twice again. Once for 5 1/2 hrs (a week ago Friday) and just Saturday night for 5 hours. The underground lines are all in bad shape in our neighborhood and Saturday night, even our transformer had to be replaced. There is a project on the books to replace the lines in our neighborhood - can't happen soon enough.

I'm so glad that I purchased 3 battery powered air pumps last fall. I've not lost anything in the outages, but I've been worried. (knock on wood.......) Luckily its not been in the dead of winter when I might have needed a heater. Almost was ready to go and rent a generator last Friday...

Never thought it would happen to us. But that goes to show that even for houses not in the country, things can happen.

I'd like to figure out a Plan B - for purchasing a car inverter - to supply additional backup power. Chris Civitate has explained it to me, but I'll need more help/guidance. Maybe this is a good topic for a regional club meeting!!!

I would think about a portable (or whole house) generator vs. power inverter for as many tanks as you have. A generator is also more versatile IMO - we have used ours several times and have never regretted it.

I have one of these type, they work really well for small things. Obviously only use this outside. Now since you will have to run cords, make sure you get the really thick heavy duty ones. The thinner ones cannot handle the load and may actually burn up what you are running. (Ask me how I know)

+1 on the generator. Its so versatile that it will quickly pay for itself in a few uses. Or even just one use if its a lengthy outage. A medium sized generator could even be used to fire up your furnace in the winter time and still leave you a couple outlets to run pumps in your tank. Definitely purchase larger gauge extension cords based on the length of them, i.e. the longer the cord the thicker it needs to be.

I have a dedicated solar panel array and deep cell batterys with inverter for this purpose. I can run a few days off this setup.
