So MidAmerican has told me that they are going to be doing some work on the power grid Tuesday the 17th and will be turning off my power from 9am to 1pm. I have battery backups for my MP40s but will that be enough to keep everything healthy for 4 hours? Most of the time my power is out for only a couple hours so but now that I know it's coming, it's got me second guessing myself.

    Go team you.

  6. Sounds like your investment in battery back ups will finally be paying off! Four hours without current shouldn't be cause for too much alarm, but seeing how you will have 40's going the whole time it sounds like you will be covered.

I personally would only worry about the temp as the other part of this equation.

I keep my home cold so the temp drops a lot.

Last time I had a scheduled outage, I turned up the ambient temp inthe home.

i agree. If you want additional assurance you could run a battery powered pump with an airstone.

Turn your heat up in the house to 78 or so a hour before the power goes out. That will keep the tank warmer during the outage.

I was going to say that too. Maybe hit the tanks with a couple of extra degrees if you can easily do that as well. You should be fine for a few hours with a little water circulation going.

I have a backup system that can run a 200 watt heater and a korilla 400gph power head for at least 24 hours. [IMG]

Pretty sweet idea. Better than what I have as a backup! NOTHING! I have to drag in a darn generator!

Have you actually tested that? A 200 watt heater won't run anywhere near 24 hours continuously on a car battery. It really would depend on how often the heater is actually on and how good of shape the battery is in. The korlia draws very little power only about 5 watts so that I can easily it see running over a week on the battery if need be.
