I had a thought, it doesn't seem like any LFS in town provides SW or RO/DI water for the local reef enthusiasts.  I have a 150 GPD RO/DI setup and if there's enough of a need for it, I could supply this to anyone who needs it.
I may eventually have to upgrade to a sponsor membership since I do maintain some tanks, but for now I'm not taking any more tanks on so I think I'm good, so I'm not looking to currently sell water.
I just would like to know how many people would be interested in such a service.
I have mixed up well over 1000 gallons of SS and RC, I regularly test for 0 ppm TDS with a Hanna meter that is regularly calibrated.
I would be able to premix IO SS or RC to a specific Salinity, mix for at least 24 hours, and possibly buffer up with BRS 2 part to desired Cal, Alk, and Mag.
I'm thinking that for straight RO/DI 0 ppm top-off water, I could do something like 50 cents/gallon, less for more quantity.
For mixed SS it would depend on salinity, but I'm thinking around $1/gallon
For mixed RC since their mix is weak (salinity wise) it takes more to go to 35-36 ppt so maybe $1.25/gallon including buffer.
Any interest or comments?  Is someone already doing this?

I requested this be moved to the Des Moines regional forum. But I suppose if anyone really wanted to drive here to get it that would be fine.

As for the price, it was an initial number I threw out there. I think the above #'s reefguy posted would probably be more what I could do it for, since I'm not delivering it.

Also I didn't mention that I can store up to 160 gallons in one shot, between buckets and BRUTE cans, and could do more if needed.

Wal-wart around here sells RO (not DI) water for 37 cents/gallon, and I've occasionally tested their water and it varies between 10-15 ppm and as high as 25 ppm.

Hy-vee sells it for 39 cents/gallon and I stopped using it because one day it tested 39 ppm.

Saltwater at an LFS is likely mixed to the directions on the product, in the case of IO SS that would be salinity of 29, which is low for most people. At $50 / 200 gallon box, that's 25 cents/gallon (just for the salt) for a low salinity mix.

Reef crystals the break is even higher, because you need 20% more salt to hit 35 salinity, so a 200g box is really only 160 gallons best case. So $50 / 160 = 32 cents/gallon (just for the salt).

My water would start with 0ppm, heated & mixed for 24 hours, tested and adjusted for parameters desired. So you would get what you pay for.

Still just throwing around the idea...

    Who is AE?

I guess I was really looking for feedback less on the cost than I was about the demand for it.

So is there anyone out there in the Des Moines area that would rather have me make the RO/DI and mix up the saltwater for them, versus buying their own RO/DI system and mixing/storing saltwater?
