Looking for ideas to keep my tools safe from the salt air in our basement. I was thinking of building a tool chest with a lid and putting weather stripping around the edge. What experience do others have in this area?

How bad it it down in your basement. I have a home theater and recording studio down there along with my tank. Now I'm nervous.

I have the same issue with some of my work tools in my box. Anyone got a good way to clean them?

It is very humid this time of the year, even with a humidifier, but our basement is divided, so I'm going to move the tools over to the non-fish side. I also have thought about putting in an exhaust fan to help move out the moisture, like we have in our bathroom.

Move the tools away from the tank as best as possible. They also make special anit-corrision liners that would probably help.Desiccant packets would be another option.

Dehumidifier and exhaust fans are a must if you have large tanks in basements. The warm damp air can wreak havok on just about everything thats exposed to it.

oil your tools. You can use just about any kind of oil. A thin coat should help.

If they are away from your tank toss a coupple of zeRust capsules in different levels of your box. They emit VCI's (volitile corrosion inhibitors) a fancy name for oily fumes, lol. They do a good job in gun safes and should do well in tool boxes also.

I might be an idiot, but it is my understanding that the water that is evaporating from your tank is just water not salt water. That being said I do not think that “salty air” is your problem I would think it’s just the humidity level in your basement.
