Ok so i bought a reef octopus protein skimmer hang on one for 60 dollars of craigslist got it on my twenty gallon sump and went to put the collection cup on it and it is half a inch to tall so I'm thinking i will cut it down 5/8 inch so it will work hate to cut it down but it is three times better then my old protein skimmer

I wouldnt cut it down or modify it. I used to have one and I know what your talking about. The best option would be to hang on back of your main tank, or get a bigger sump to where it fits. I ended up going with an in sump skimmer.

I was thinking of hanging one of these on my sump...is the water level pretty critical?

No the water level ain't crucial the inlet pipe with the power head im going to go to mendards and get a little longer sch 80 gray pipe
The only problem i have is it is to tall and i can't fit the collection cup on top so I'm thinking about cut the cup down 1/2 inch so it will fit other wise it is working awesome even with out the collection cup in place still bubbling at the top great just no way to catch the bubbles

I say get a taller stand or a different skimmer. I know that sucks but what is worse butchering up a piece of equipment to find out it doesnt work for you or nobody else now that you altered it, then having to buy another anyways. Just do a bit of research first before buying another and maybe you could trade for one which will fit.
