So I was doing some generic maint on my tank last night, rinsing sponge, trimming chaeto etc, and I noticed that the bottom of my floating therm, which I keep in the middle back chamber of my biocube, was broken off. Instantly I start to panic right, thinking the worst, the red stuff is like nuclear waste and the weights are made out of cyanide. I pull everything out of the middle chamber, unplug my pump, start rinsing everything in clean water, convinced the entire time all my fish are gonna bite the big one and my coral is gonna melt.
So after an hour of OCD cleaning, I decide I have done what I can, I plug the pump back in and grab a beer and sit and watch. After a minute I decide to google it and see whats in the things, and go f'in figure, the red stuff is glycerin based and the weights are either steel or stainless steel.  [IMG]
So in case anyone ever wonders, there is no harm that can really be done by one of these breaking in your tank [IMG]

The weights ended up to be magnetic so the odds are they are not stainless I guess.

To my knowledge many states have actually banned the sale of "traditional" thermometers that use dangerous chemicals. It would lead me to believe that it is easier for companies to just produce the stuff that is considered safe nationwide to make selling/shipping the units easier for them. FWIW I think if a lethal chemical got in your tank like that there is probably no amount fo cleaning that can be done to save you.

I appreciate folks mentioning things like this. I would have thought mercury, so I'm happy for your tank I was wrong....and since you spoke up, now I know better.

Man, I would have been pretty bummed if I lost all the stuff in my tank.

Happened to me in a freshwater once. Just grab a magfloat and run it along the bottom where it broke and it will grab all the little metal balls.

Yea I've broken quite a few of those through out the years. Haven't had any problems.
