I'm searching I'm shopping for 2 pumps for my new 125. It has a closed loop, so I want to try that. Not sure what pump to get. Nemesis was running an Iwaki 30 on it, but I'm not sure I want to go that route. How much flow should I shoot for in a closed loop?

For the return I've been leaning toward a Mag 9.5. The sump is drilled for an external pump, but I'm not sure I want to go that way, as the below-tank real estate is limited

The return pump on my current system is a marineland mj5500. I want to upgrade to a better, quieter pump, but since I need to buy 2 I can't break the bank on either.

Check with Craig (xroads) he's had experience with closed looped systems.

The main thing is going to be velocity through the outlet, a 1" fitting will accommodate nearly 1kgph per bulkhead, how many outlets does it have? If its 2 or 3 this pump might be perfect, if its 4-6 or more the. You might think about something larger, and/or a rotating drum aka scwd.

It's two intakes and two returns on with a spraybar. Not sure how that stacks up to your question. This is all new to me.

That might be perfect for this pump. pictures?
Talk to Craig too to get his input, I would pm him to get his attention. I'm interested to know exactly what he thinks. I understand cl systems entirely but on a theoretical level. I'd like to hear what input Craig has, probably mostly on where to place bulkheads but perhaps more.

I have a mag 9.5 return on my 125 with dual overflows. Tried a mag 12 but was to much and overflows couldn't keep up .

If you want to go with an internal pump on the return take a look at the new DC pumps that are coming out from reef octopus. Runs on 24 v DC which means it can be tied to a battery backup, no high voltage running in you tank. More effiecient pump all around.
Diablo DC 5500 Variable Speed Water Pump
Max Flow: 1450gph Max Head: 10.5ft
Power Consumption: 50 watts at Full Speed

Compare that to some of the other internal pumps out there.

Water blaster 5000 1300 GPH 60 watts 12' max head
    Eheim 1262 900GPH 80 watts 11'6" max head
    Mag 9.5 950 gph 93 watts 14' max head

Either way the good ol' mag drive pump is terrible in terms of efficiency compared to almost everything else. And if you plan to go with halides over this tank, a more efficient pump will make a world of difference in your water temp.

Thanks for posting this Dave! Ive been looking for a back-up return pump and wasn't aware of the Diablo DC pumps... Those look sweet and very effecient! The other pump manufacturers need to get up to speed with this. Now to decide if I should get the 3500 or the 5500 version. It would be nice to see the flow rates/power consumption at the 6 different settings.

I really like danner mag drive pumps. I use a mag 3 to run feed my calcium reactor and media reactors. I use a mag 18 as a return pump on my 120 gallon. Although i do not have a closed loop system i have read of others using danner mag drive pumps on closed loop systems. They have a good warranty on their products and are very sturdy and extremely well made.

I don't like mag drive pumps personally, they run too hot!

So work of the dialblos should I get? I could afford the 3500, but with having to buy 2 pumps I couldn't do the 5500. Andy, what would you take for the pump you have? I had to go out of town for a family emergency so I'll be wanting to get rolling when I get home this weekend.

I'd take Andy up on his pump, seems like it would be a good fit for the closed loop anyway.

That would be a reasonable concern. DC pumps used for aquariums have been around several years. I think they were first used in some of the higher end skimmers. I also believe there were some issues and recalls on the some earlier DC pumps. I'm sure the companies have learned from those failures and made some improvements. And I'm sure there will be more improvements if the application is proven to work long term.

If I was looking for a pump I would probably take the chance and try one of these out.

Yeah - DC pumps themselves aren't new, they just were not common because there was little need for them which made them expensive... Vortechs and variable speed Tunze's are all DC pumps/powerheads (I think) and they both seem to be pretty reliable. With any product in this hobby though, the first model usually has a few minor things that end up getting enhanced with a newer model a year or two later down the road. I'm willing to bet they won't stay at that low of a price for very long..unless they turn out to be garbage... it would be nice to see a a longer warranty, but I guess 1-2 years is common anymore.

I just have to say, it's about fraggin' time the pump manufacturers get with the program. Hopefully this will help get some competition started in this market... It's certainly long overdue.
