Knowing that Reef Geek is offering a pretty good deal on Vortech I was wondering what the pros and cons are of the various different brands.  The Vortech sounds great but is pricey.  I've noticed that club members have also offered up Korila, Tunze and other pumps for sale.  Is there a "best" pump or does it depend on what you're trying to accomplish?

Well, what you'll usually hear is that whatever someone has, they will like the best when it comes to Tunze and Vortech. Both great pumps. Tunze has a longer track record for reliability, but Vortech has a smaller in tank foot print and some cool control options. It also depends on what you're trying to accomplish...for example, if you just want to get some directional flow in a frag tank, the Koralias are inexpensive and give you a lot of bang for your buck. If you want controllable pumps, go Tunze or Vortech. If you want just narrow focus flow, Koralias or even MaxiJets are great (and there are some good MaxiJet mods out there). Anyway, I know this is not an answer to your question, but the real answer really comes down to you. How much you want to spend, what kind of water movement you want, if you want to be able to use an aquarium controller to program it, what kind of in-tank footprint you want, etc. All of those things are the decisions you need to make to help you decide which pump is best for you. And seeing some of these pumps in action on tank tours or club events really helps out too.
