My wife has asked if we can house a purple lobster and/or a paired yashia goby/banded pistol shrimp. Does anyone have knowledge of these? Are they totally reef safe? I heard somewhere that certain pistol shrimp can break glass. Fact or fiction? I would kate to get pinched by a shrimp that can crack 1/2" glass.

I actually have both in my reef tank... I believe its the mantis shrimp that can break the glass.. I have 2 tiger pistol shrimp and they are paired with a yellow watchman and a pink bar goby.. Its really cool when they hang out at the dif caves that they made together.... As for the lobster I just feed mine a piece of krill every once and awhile but im pretty sure he is the reason why my peppermint shrimp are gone though...

just thought I would also throw this out there you will barely see the pistol shrimp cause they stay mainly in there cave and as for the lobster he hides in a cave but comes out to eat

Is there such thing as a non-reef safe clam?   ;-)
And as far as the pistol goes, you don't have to worry about it breaking that glass.  Armydog is right, it's the mantis shrimp that can do that.  I believe the purple lobster may be aggressive toward other inhabitants in the tank like other shrimp or crabs, but shouldn't eat your corals.

AJ, you crazy man, I meant will they hurt the clams. I will not entertain the lobster. Seems too border line and is known to eat shrimp. I dont need bullies in my reef. One bi, divers, happy reef party going on!

Hahaha...had to give you a hard time about the reef safe clam..haha. I agree with that approach on the lobster. Seems to risky. I learned my lesson on hit/miss livestock with my flame angel...I have 3 open brains that are still paying that price.

My lobster isnt aggressive at all and really cool to look at when he is out... I think they are considered semi aggressive but a lot of others are considered that to.
