I have a 55 gallon QT tank that is all set up but I rarely, rarely use. It has been running for about six months. It has a bunch of live rock, and has an old Magnum filter circulating the water and filtering the tank using filter floss and carbon.

Question: When there are no fish in the tank, do I need to have my light come on every day for a few hours? If so, why, and for how many hours?

I would say no need for light.

I figured I would leave my QT/ hospital tank empty except when I needed it. I thought I would just do a water change with the display to fill it when needed. Sounds like you are going to be using it a bunch soon though LOL

If you have live rock in it... wouldn't you want the light on for a little bit to stimulate the other animals within the live rock?

why have live rock at all? if you do get a fish that is deasesed and you dont drain and clean out the tank after words you run the risk of exposing the next fish to it just run a empty tank with a power head and heater and do a partial water change every other day and get the water from your main disply tank that way the water parameters will be the same. or do like i do i have a litermeter doing automatic water changes from my main tank and the waste water goes into my 10 gal quartine tank which has an over flow to a drain that way i am getting 4 gallons of water replaced in the quaratine tank everyday

I have live rock because it gives the fish somewhere to hide.
