I'm starting to hate my substrate choice because I picked the ultra fine sand. Wondering if there would be any big problems siphoning out a bunch during water changes and then adding a little bit bigger type on top.

i think it might do another cycle if you do that not sure if live sand would cause a cycle or not

+1 .... I think you are going to want to switch more slowly. Work across the tank or something. And a couple cups a day so that you don't get a big spike or so. Then you could over time transition. Just take a bit longer.

How i read it, u don't plan on taking all of it out? Just some of it and then cover it up with different sand?

I was thinking I could siphon out the fine stuff during water changes and then start slowly adding coarser rock on top. If I kept slowly doing it I'm hoping to eventually replace most of the fine with bigger sand. The stuff I have now is so powdery that I can't even use my magnet cleaner near it without it kicking up a dust storm. It's all over my rock, etc.

Yeah, I think that could work then.

Why don't you like the fine sand?

My guess is because it gets blown around so easily and end up all over everything.

Yeah, the kick up every time I do anything is what is really bugging me. Other than that I have no problems with it. Tanks been up for a couple months. I only have a bunch of snails, couple clownfish, hermit crab, and one zoa coral right now. And a bunch of live rock.

Okay makes sense, I am relatively new and also bought the finer sand, but looks like I am lucky that it is not blowing around in my tank.

    Thanks
