I think the reason that many dislike live sand is because it tends to have some grains that are magnetic. This can be a royal PITA if you are using a mag-float type of device to clean your glass, which I think most people in the hobby do use.

Yes. I think it generally isn;t an issue unless you get pretty close with the float, but that is enough still to make me want to avoid it.

I'm filling mine with tahitian black, and I've got a MAG 10 cleaner. I'll let ya know how it goes. The mag 10 set me back $275. As it sits in the bag, the sand isn't magnetic. I'll know in saltwater in about 6 weeks I think....

I don't know about the kind you are talking about but the tahitian moon sand is definetly magnetic. I use to have it in my display mixed with white sand and it would get in the mag float and scratch the crap out of the glass. It's one off the reasons I rebuilt my system. But I'm not to sure if the kind you are talking about is because a friend of mine has it in a bio and I don't think he has had a problem.

The first link works, but it takes us to a link of all of their sand. Not hard clicking on the black bag though LOL. The second link doesn't work at all for me. As far as magnetism, I do not believe the entirity of the sand is magnetic. There are just some magnetic grains/slivers in it. Again, this is only based on what I have read. I would shoot that question with a working ink up on RC. Far more people see those posts and I am sure someone has come across the sand you are considering.

Hmm...thats not the stuff I have here that I have magnet tested.

Mine is Carib Sea SuperNaturals Tahitian Moon. I'm still waiting to test it in water tho; hopefully soon since my Air Water and Ice water filters showed today! Wahoo!
