Hey everybody! I have a couple of random questions about salt...

First, what salt does everybody use? I use Red Reef Coral Pro salt. No particular reason other than it had pretty good reviews. Would people agree or disagree with this salt? If you suggest something different, why?

Second - I have a digital salinity probe from Atlas Scientific. One of the cool thing about this probe is that it measures salinity in both ppt as well as specific gravity, and you can also pass it the temperature of the water so it can make adjustments based on temperature.

However, I am getting a strange reading from it. At 78.76 degrees Fahrenheit, my salinity is reading 34.74ppt. Pretty good, since I am targeting 35ppt based on what I have read online. However, my specific gravity is measuring 1.030.

Those readings are strange to me because using a specific gravity calculator, with those readings my specific gravity should be 1.026, not 1.030.

So I know that .004 isn't very much, and maybe that doesn't matter. But, according to successfulreefkeeping.com, the target for salinity should be 34.0-36.0ppt and the specific gravity should be between 1.021-1.026.

So that means that I am square in the middle of where I want to be for a ppt reading, but I am higher than the "good range" on specific gravity.

So what gives? How can I be great with one way to measure salinity and too high when going off another way? Are there other factors that I am not considering?

The reason I am asking is because I have been battling a terrible cyano outbreak for months. I don't particularly think salinity has anything to do with this, but am trying to rule everything out. :)

I am a fan of the Red Sea salt and have been around the block a few times in terms of salt selection. I currently use the regular red sea salt (for probably the last 3 years). The difference between the regular and the pro version is the pro version has elevated levels of certain elements while regular targets natural seawater levels. I try to stay close to NSW and dose Ca/alk/Mg to keep levels where they need to be. So for my system I would end up screwing things up if I did water changes with the pro salt. If you don't want to dose anything and want to maintain elements with water changes then the pro salt is going to be a good bet for you.

That's interesting on your salinity/specific gravity divergence. Do you have a refractometer to double check it? Alternatively, if you have 35 ppt calibration fluid for your probe you could verify that your salinity is accurate. 34.74 ppt sounds pretty good to me as long as it also reads the calibration fluid pretty closely.

Red Sea salt...I prefer to dose additives vs using RS Coral Pro

I think the fact that only specific gravity is effected by temperature may be the slight difference you are seeing.
Looks like at 25deg celcius is where you should hit the 1.028. You're closer to 26 deg C. I'd have to see what the forumla is, but I would say that's the difference. If you continue to target 35ppt i'd say you are golden and I wouldn't worry much about salinity readings.

PPT/SG/PSU are difficult to compare because of temp and other factors. The important thing is to choose which you want to use and stay with it. I do not use SG because of the temperature factor, even though I have a temperature compensation on my meter. The small sample of SW used to read the SG can change rapidly so I try to not to have temp be a factor, thus the reason I use PPT.
