On top of my 75g I had egg crate to keep a firefish from jumping out. This tank is home to an rbta as well. A while back I lost the firefish unfortunately, so I removed the egg crate. My anemone looks entirely different to the point that the wife thought it was a different anemone. It has gone from red/orange to fluorescent pink and its tentacles which were long and slender are now shorter and way more bulbous. The lights are the same T5 4x54 as before. Didn't think that eggcrate was making that big a difference but that was the only change I made. Thought that was very interesting

Was it white eggcrate or black eggcrate? I had white eggcrate for a while on my 75gal but then heard that altered the light too much - kind of sounds like your experience. If you still want a top, I'd recommend making one using black netting, aluminum door frame (Lowe's) and corners (also can be purchased from Lowe's). Or BRS sells a whole kit. Pretty easy to do. I have them over my 75 gal and 20 gal tanks. I'm sure someone in the CR region has made a screen for sure.

It was white egg crate. I used what was handy, but if I needed another screen I would go the frame and mesh like you suggest. For now I'm going sans cover.
