Those that are playing with LEDs, is it worth the money getting a star with three LEDs on it? http://shop.stevesleds.com/3-up-Tristar-Separate-wiring-Tristar-Separate.htm

    Would these be any better?

I know a lot of people use the 3 ups because u can get a full spectrum out of fewer chips. Almost like puc lights. That 100w would be awesome but id worry about heat. And idk how the spread would be. One of those would be sweet over a cube but on a long tank id think 3 or so?

I was looking at the 3 ups. I'd still need 54 of them. 18 per section. to get the same coverage if I used 162 single LEDs. My issue is what if one of the LEDs on a 3 up goes out? I gotta replace the whole star.

I was looking at those 5 channel. They'd be great and I'd need probably 6 of those, 2 per section to get the coverage.

Either way I am looking at about $600 in LEDs if I want the green / cyan and reds. Or I can go back down to just royal blue and warm / soft white for $300.

Also need to add the cost of Heat Sink to those prices yet, but that is like maybe $50.

I thought about that as well. But my 135 is split into three sections so not sure I'd get the needed coverage.

Can check out reefbreeders for some nice lights that won’t break your wallet. I would not use white/blue only LEDs. Some corals do fine, but there is a reason most of the companies have moved to full spectrum. Not only does the coral pop a lot more and look better, but it seems that a few coral really need the more complete spectrum to do well.

Bud - Yea I am rebuilding everything. Stand, plumbing, lights, sump, etc. I want this thing to purr like a kitten when done lol

Hart - Lights are probably the last thing I'll work on due to the changes with LEDs and what coral need / want. I've been tossing around the idea of SOLs and also just kits of LEDs to glue or bolt onto a heat sink. Also trying to decide on power and where to hide all of them wonderful drivers.

Yes i have 2 of them on my 125 and a photon unit. Work great. I replaced my Metal halide T-5 combo light with them.

I have 2 value on my 65 with 90 optics. Insane amount of light, but it's a clam/softie tank so they love it! A few more ppl here have them too. Here is a quote from another thread, thanks for the PAR info Dave!

We have 4 of the RB value fixtures on our 210 and did take par readings and here is a subset of them as follows:

At 75% white & blue channels (this is where we keep them now)

    Depth PAR
    ◾1" 990
    ◾15" 440
    ◾29" 130

At 100% white & blue channels
    ◾1" 1040
    ◾15" 470
    ◾29" 140

For comparison, here is the PAR readings from our 3x250W MH + 80W T5 fixture
    ◾1" 450
    ◾15" 175
    ◾29" 120

Both lights grow coral well. MH doesn't have the PAR value at shallower depths but seems to penetrate better given they are relatively equal at 29".

WOW! The only thing the Values dont have is the green. Is that a killer when looking at spectrum? Still not sure I want to drop $600 on lights though. I guess LEDs also have a 10 year life span so justify the cost that way lol. dang wife...
