I have recently gotten a couple outbreaks of red algae that blankets rock. It is easily blown off by a steady current. It also comes and goes and never really gets problamatic. It also does not really bother me that much.

I have one year old T-5 bulbs. I have not been running half of them (blues) for over a month due to a ballast/timer/wiring issue that I have not had time to address.

I assume this reduced lighting is what is causing the red algae. Maybe not. Anyone have any ideas on what I have and how to rid myself of it?

You have the good ol' cyanobacteria. In my experience it will build up wherever you have a build up of waste. If it keeps coming back in the same spots you can just re-orient you flow so that the detritus doesn't settle there. I have heard some folks say it is related to lighting issues, but I have always found that where you get low flow, that where things will settle and that's where you'll have cyano.
