I have used the old hydrometer way of checking salinity, but have never used a refactometer? Are they easy to use and what brand would you recommend?

We have a portable refractometer, I'm not sure if that's it's brand name or not.... it's just the only words on the case. But it's been good to us over the years, very dependable and gets the job done quickly and efficiently. I would say they are very easy to use...and would be my preferred method of checking salinity levels.

Here's one I found off a quick google search, looks almost identical to our set.

they all work the same. Get a refractometer with calibration solution and go to town! They are easy to use and far more accurate.

Went ahead and got one on ebay. Should be here in about 4 days. Came with calibrating fluid and hard case.

I have the one from Bulk Reef Supply.. Very nice.

  7. We have one, love it! Not sure of the brand though. I like it better than the hydro...not that either are difficult but refractometers are "cleaner" and no hands in the tank! I think you'll like it!

They are not all the same. This one is specific for aquaria (instead of brine) and has a tighter (and more relevant) range.

I went from the hydro to the refracto and thought I was in hog heaven. Then I bought the milwaukee electronic refractometer from brs on black friday for $79 which is not much more then what I paid for the regular refracto, and let me tell you its one of the best tools I have purchased yet. It takes 2 seconds to calibrate and 2 seconds to get a reading.

As Bud said, not all refractometers are the same. If you are not using one made especially for NSW(D-D H2o), then you should be looking for a reading of 36.5ppt instead of 35ppt.

That's what "they" say, but I tested one of the BRS ones right next to my Milwaukee meter and it read the same - 33 ppt on both. So it raises the question about hw many out there are Brine refractometers and how many are Salinity, and whhich marketing department knows the difference.

The MD one is better IMO because of the scale only reading from 30-40ppt so much better accuracy.

Vital Sine Refractometer Top notch salinity refracometer with auto temp compensation.

Be careful with those cheap Chinese refracs if they don't have atc a warm hand will cause the readings to change right in front of you. I had a cheap $30 one I got on eBay years ago and the reading would change as you hold onto it from the barrel warming up.
