    Hello everyone,
New guy here, I'm Jim from Johnston,IA. I'm in the process of setting up a new aquarium. Made a sump with the usual 3 sections. One for the skimmer, one for the return, one for a refugium. My question is for you folks with same type of sump. What do you like to use for a substrate in the refugium section? Live rock rubble, sand, something else. Whats worked for you? I think I'm going to use it to cultivate pods and such at first, maybe nitrate reduction down the road. I'd like to know how yours is set up. Thanks for lookin.

I like to use crushed coral because it is easy to vac. If you go this route rinse the crushed coral very well.

i have about 3" of live sand with 15lbs of tonga branch rock, 5 mangroves, chaeto, and zenia. As far as pods, REEFS2GO has BOGO 500 pods forsale so u get 1000 pods for i think 16.99. I put half in sump and the other half in display. I just did it with all the lights and pumps off at night so as to not let the fish go crazy tryn to eat them. Hopefully this helps.

If you have sand in the display, I would go with rubble & cheato. If you are going bare bottom go Sand, rubble, & cheato

    Good luck
