What do you use for substrate, if any, in your refugium.
Going to be doing this soon, was looking for opinions and or experience of what you do or would run.
My refugium is in firs section of my sump. I was leaning towards Carrib-Sea Live sand but still thinking it over.
My refugium will be more for pod/micro fauna with several different types of macro algae. And aid my skimmer in nutrient removal.
I have in the past gone bare bottom. Also deep sand bed refugium roughly 5 inch. And used eco systems miracle mud.
Any positives or negative of any you have experienced?
I probably will not do bare bottom. I like having something for worms, pods, and other creatures go live in.
I didn't see a whole lot of difference running the mud but could be just me.
I have a bucket of sand laying around I could use but what's everyone think?

I am using smaller 1-3 inch pieces of rock, I am guessing bigger than Rock rubble. Makes it easy to remove them for cleaning. the pods have plenty or room to propagate in the Chaeto and other micro algae I have in there.

Is there a reason you have it in your first section before your skimmer? I was actually just talking about this the other day.

EDIT: In the past I've always used rock rubble with a bare bottom.

I use crushed coral as it is easily cleaned.

I like to use the rubble with some bigger type of rock. with some sand. with the Chaeto, and Dragons breath. and a ton of light for Growth. and a bit of flow.

It was about 2 1/2 inches deep. Had chaeto on top of that growing with some small pieces of live rock.

Some of the algae that will be in refugium: Dragons Breath, String of Pearls, Blue something or other can't remember name lol, small amount of Chaeto I will keep it well harvested, some mangroves maybe 6 or so and whatever else I trade for.

Special Grade Reef Sand IMO is the best stuff. I usually go with either a thin layer, 0.5" roughly, or for a tank that has burrowers, about 1.5-2".

Sorry I just saw this was fuge substrate. I don't run a fuge...but if I did I would either go with just live rock or mud, about 2" of miracle mud, but then again I've never done the miracle mud either, just heard good things (and bad things)
