Ok ya'll, I need a little advice or direction. I have a biocube 29 that has all the filter chambers in the back; however they are not big enough for my skimmer, heater, return pump, chemical filtration, etc.

I have a 5.5 gallon glass tank I purchased for a med tank, but I need to build a sump/refugium to get all my equipment in. So, the question is, do I build this tank into what I need or do I try to purchase one? Either way I will need to purchase an overflow box and a bigger return pump. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

I use a 40b for a sump. I just laid it out a skimmer chamber, refuguim chamber, and return-heater chamber.
I got the glass baffles cut at a glass shop. I made water depth same as recommended skimmer depth.
Make sure you have all equipment on hand. So you can put in sump for measurements and make marks on side of glass with a marker. So when you get you baffles you can line them up and silicone in. Easy.
My other sump is a Rubbermaid stock tank. No baffles.
Get the biggest tank you can fit in your stand.

Thanks Jeremy! I Thought the 5 gallon was a little small but it was on hand. I will look into a larger sump/refugium. Do you happen to know a glass store in Des Moines?

Lay out all your equipment and try to find a size tank that will fit your stand and all your equipment. Bigger is better, but that doesn't always work when you're trying to put it in a stand or have limited space.

My next issue is finding an overflow box that will fit in the back of a Biocube 29. The system is up and running, cycling, so I can't drill in it.

What is going in there? I have maxi jet return pump, hydor skimmer, mini max reactor, heater, auto top off, temp probe. They all fit pretty good in the Biocube. I couldn't use the intank media basket, but the skimmer seems to keep the tank going. I do weekly water changes and dose kalkwasser in the ato.
I'd say check it out, but the kids would freak if the principal showed up.( Be kind of funny)
You probably know them both, not that they are troublemakers. ( Frost twins )

I have had sump glass cut at Harmon glass on east Walnut before and they were fine.

Just throwing this out there but, would it make more sense to buy a larger cube that is reef ready? You can normally find a decent used one with tank, stand, and sump for a reasonable price.

Thank you all for the advice. I did go with a 10 gallon sump/refugium set up, found a place in Perry Iowa, Ace hardware, that cold the 1/4 glass and cut it for me. 4 pieces, cut, for about 10 bucks total. Great place. Almost have the sump done, then will be doing the plumbing. This is really a fun project and I am enjoying the learning experience from it. I have found that my silicone skills are.... how should I put it, SUCK!!! Really, really suck. But it is water tight. Now to try and put a bubble trap in.
    :(

If you pull water from the first chamber and return it in the 3rd chamber you actually shouldn't need a bubble trap. The bubbles should just come right to the surface instead of going through your 3rd chamber return pump. Could also return it in the 2nd chamber to be safe.
