After the insightful comments and my own research I decided to remove the bioballs from my system.  This I think will serve me better in the long run.  However, here is my new problem.  My overflows were full of bio balls, now they have nothing in them: the problem being, they are loud as all get out.  That water falls all the way from the top.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to quite down these noisy beasts?  Thanks,

You need a durso standpipe. Easy to make: http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

I use the durso standpipe as well. I also found success with the horfer gurgle buster.

Have fun with this. Like everything in reefing, have patience and dial it in.

You should try to build it yourself. It is an easy project and the skills you use will go a long ways towards future plumbing projects.

You can't really screw this one up. If you do, it is a cheap to start all over.

You don't even need to glue it together. I made some pretty good quick measurements and put it together, and it worked first time. Not something that usually happens for me. It is a very easy project.

If I can put together a Durso standpipe that actually worked, then anyone can. I just copied and pasted the instructions into word and printed it out. Took the Parts list and studied it pretty well and took it with me to Lowes. I had made notes of what size each thing was and it was not hard at all. Only 1 other trip to Lowes and I had everything I needed.

    Sean,
I don't remember how your overflows were set up BUT... I would look into the beananimal overflow system. IMO (and the opinion of many), this is hands down the quietest and safest system for your overflows. The only draw back is the area that the three pipes per overflow takes up.

I can help you with this when I stop over Sean.  Somtimes plain venting will quiet the noise a bunch, otherwise a simple durso is uh simple.

Ok, first of all I want to say once again thanks so much to those of you on this website. Research is a ciritical part of this hobby but having people point you in the right direction is awesome. Trevor, (although he has mediocre taste in music) has been an awesome help to me. We build a couple Durso standpipes today, yes they are hilariously easy to build and I ham pretty happy with how quite it haqs made the tank. I also got the leather recliners moved into the fish tank room. All is good on the homefront. Now just cant wait for fall fest to get some nice frags.

If it will take you a few days to build the durso standpipe and you cant stand how loud it is until then, stick a piece of airline tubing in your overflow for now this is just a bandaid not a full solution to the standpipe until the standpipe is done. Air will go up the tube(s) and you will have less of the gargling sound. Play with the tubes to get it to work better or how you like it.

It is the same idea as the durso, air and water travel through different passages.

Kudos, on doing your own research as well. Though we will point you in the right direction, only you can do what you feel comfortable doing. Just ask AJ about his hyposalinity disaster, advise he got from somewhere else. This hobby is still in its beginnings, there are no experts yet. Thanks to this club, others like it, and the ones with degrees in the field, and the pioneers who openly share information to help the newcomers in the hobby. Any question you may have and post, will be found by members not yet in the hobby.
