Just went to turn my return pump back on after a water change and now its making a rattly/scratchy noise. It's pumping water like normal and I can't feel any electricity in the water. Its a mag 7 submersed in the last chamber of my sump. Water level is plenty above the pump and there have been no changes to the system.
Any ideas? Is this something I should be worried about that I should turn it off?

There could be something in the impeller or you could have a broken shaft. Take the screws out of the end and you should be able to tell what's flight on.

Good for you for having a spare pump on hand!

Yeah, I know! Thanks to crabbyo for sending it with me when I bought her tank. Exact match to what i've been using.

As for the old, before I replaced it I did like you suggested. Couldn't find anything jammed in it. Cleaned everything and put it back together but no improvement. I need to find a diagram of a mag pump to see if maybe a piece is broken or not.. I'll keep you posted.

There's no moving parts inside those pumps except the impeller. Replace it and it will fix it.

Ok... so when I took out the impeller, there was a metal rod with a black rubber stopper on each end. Then starting from the most inner part, there was a large magnet, followed by a second magnet that had the 'wings' that spin, followed by two washers?? I'm not sure if there are suppose to be washers or anything on it.

Usually impellers are sold with all of those parts. [IMG] Did the sides of the shaft look worn?
Just reread your post, you might just have a grain of sand trapped in there.

I have actually had an impeller similar to this that came apart in the middle where the two halves of magnet join.

The shaft 'might' have a small notch on it somewhere. Or the 'magnet' might be worn/smoothe. Either of those could cause the sound that you heard. Just sounds like you need an impeller ;-0) It's always good to have a spare Girl ;-0)

So when you said 2 magnets and washers, that got me thinking because I don't ever recall seeing 2 magnets on an impeller...made me wonder if your magnet had split. So I opened up the Mag 7 I have downstairs and looked at the impeller. The part that looks like the smaller magnet is just the bottom part of the propeller (or whatever it's called). Mine has a ceramic shaft, not metal...and I was surprised to see washers in there...but mine has them too (one on bottom side and three on top side). Maybe you can try messing around with the placement of the washers and see if that makes a difference. The other place to look is down inside the actual area where the impeller goes as there could be something embedded in the plastic that's rubbing the impeller. Do you see any grooves on the magnet like it's been rubbing up against something? Hope you find the cause.
