Marion is notorius for having super hard water. Anyone here from the Marion area and have an RO/DI filtration system in their house? How long do the filters and membrane last? Probably looking into getting one of these as hauling water from the store is getting old fast. Have a 29 gallon biocube now but will be looking to go bigger possibly up to a 55 - 75 gal tank, so not sure how big of a RO/DI unit would fit my needs.

I live in Marion and I have had an RO/DI unit for years. The marion water is very hard, but it doesn't cause that many problems with the filters as long as you don't use the 1 micron filters. In fact, I go much longer than the recommended amount of time between changes and the quality of my RO/DI doesn't change all that much.

    JB,

Can you clarify what filters you use?

I just basically follow the recommendations of Air, Water & Ice.

    10 Micron Sediment
    5 Micron Carbon
    1 Micron Carbon
    RO Membrane
    DI Resin Chamber

Here's the filter pack I usually get:

I change the RO membrane every year or two (usually two).

I buy the DI resin in bulk and change/repack the chamber as needed.

Chris, are you still having issues with nitrates in your water?

No! I was out of town for almost a month and my filter stopped being effective while I was out of town. Replaced the cartridges and have been getting the Nitrates down slowly!

Aah, sweet! I was worried about mine and was wondering if anyone else in the DSM area had been having the same issues. I'm kind of on the fence about adding another cartridge to my unit, just in case.
