Once I decide what RO/DI unit I want it will be my Christmas present.  [IMG]  I've narrowed it down to Bulk Reef Supply, The Filter Guys or AWI.  I know AWI supports the club so that's a plus for them.
What I' more interested in is the number of stages and accessories needed.  These things get pricy in a hurry and I'd rather save for better lighting or a bigger tank.
I'm on Des Moines water so I'm wondering if a good 4 stage will do the job.  From what I can learn DWW does not use chloramines so I'm not sure the extra carbon/sediment filter would do much.  I'm more worried about the nitrates from the Raccon river watershed.  Also what accessories are needed versus nice to have?  I think any of the 75 gpd units will more than do the job.

Will a 4 stage filter do the job? Yes but a 5 stage will do even better. There is nothing wrong with trying to save money but your RO/DI unit shouldn't be one of them. It is a basic building block to a good tank. TDS monitors on the unit is nice but not needed. A must have IMO is a good TDS meter and calibration fluid.

The vendors I named all have good reviews on RC and the other websites.  There are other good ones out there but AWI supports the club and BRS and TFG are both close for shipping.  At this level I doubt there is a best, just a most convenient for your needs.

Stew is right. You really cannot go wrong with any of the vendors listed above.

Thanks slovan!  I definitely need the RO only valve but how about the back flush?

I figured I would throw out there what wonderful assistance AWI provides. I bought a USED Typhoon III off of ebay about a year ago now. I was having problems getting 0 TDS so I contacted them via email. They needed the original owner's info. to confirm that the product was purchased from them and they sent out a new membrane free of charge no toher questions asked. It could have very well been the fact that the membrane dried out during shipment, but they didn't care at all. It is rare to find such good service in any form these days. IMO they went above and beyond what was required of them and I will continue to back them and recommend them for this reason.

I should add that the Typhoon III has all of the above. The backflush system is a great way to lengthen the life of the RO membrane as it flushes mineralizations/residues off of it. Might cost a few bucks more for the feature but IMO you will save much more than that in lengthening membrane life.

I have a flush kit on mine but have never used it.  You are supposed to flush it like once a month to preserve your membrane but it hasn't happened and everything is fine.

I would give thought to that maybe in the future DWW might begin using chloramine (or if you would happen to move) especially because of all the flooding we've had the past few years. I agree that RO/DI is the foundation of reefkeeping. I believe a 4 stage is adequate in most areas. I use a flush kit on mine but they are not absolutely needed however, for the few dollars it costs and prolonging the membrane, I thought it was worth it. A TDS meter is going to be worth its weight in gold after the RO/DI has been used for some time. Being a water fanatic, I use 2 dual meters on my system...I have every filter monitored that way:) I also have a portable/handheld TDS meter which is a Hanna combo that measures pH, temp, and TDS.

Although you didn't mention your PSI coming out of your tap, most RO/DI's are rated for a specific PSI(usually at 50 PSI). One can be purchased quite inexpensively as well. I purchased an add on DI from BRS. They get things shipped "very quickly" and are helpful too. Sponsors I have dealt with have always been more than helpful:)
