Just an FYI - my wife picked up the flyer so I haven't chatted with Brandon yet about the details or the content.

I figured there'd be some negativity as this is at a big box store with a questionable history (in general).

I don't have any problems with Petco, have purchased 6 or 7 fish in the past with one issue (money was refunded over 30 days later when it perished).
As with any store, you run the risk of getting a fish with issues which is why you shouldn't buy anything that looks sick and should quarantine.
I don't want this to turn into a Petco hater's thread.
I know Brandon (runs Coralville fish dept) is an avid reefer, is on GIRS/Reef Central, and I believe attended & purchased at the recent fall fest.
He is up against a company that's looking more at the bottom line (profit) and he's trying to change things, at least in his location.  He can't have RO, can't treat diseases & is forced to use some generic no-name salt.  Their prices aren't the lowest, although I know that they will match local vendors.  I also know that they've changed livestock suppliers and can now refuse specimens that look sick or mistreated.
My wife picked up the flyer and I posted it.

You know, the same goes for any retailer...I would imagine that when you go through a very high volume of fish, some of them are going to be sick and diseased. If they kept them in quarantine for the amount of time that most experts recommend and treated things as needed, they wouldn't be able to sell them for what they would need to get out of them to pay for the care to keep them in quarantine. It's a give and take, you have to be picky about what you buy. You decide what you put in your tank and whether or not you quarantine it, not PetCo.

It sounds like the poor decisions of their corporate offices contribute to the reputation that they have earned over the years. Either way, it sure would be interesting to hear what kind of advice they're giving noobs and would probably be a great opportunity to distribute club business cards or our flyer targeted to beginners. If anyone plans to be there, let me know and I'll see if we can get you hooked up with the appropriate materials.

It would be interesting to hear what they are telling people.

At least they are trying to get people in the hobby so then in the long run they will find us.

Please don't get me wrong. I strongly support the actual Fish Counselors at Petco. Most have seemed very knowledgable of their fish and their needs. I just hate how the head of the franchizes don't seem to take that little extra care the fish need. I work at Petland in Iowa City and I know exactly what Brandon is going through everytime he gets in a shipment of sad/sick fish. It plain old sucks! But we do our best to get them ready for new homes. In no way did I intend to sound like I was attack any of the workers at Petco, merely the franchise owners who don't care quite as much as they should, IMO.

Haha, so yeah, if anyone ever goes to Petland in Iowa City, I work as a double as a Fish Nerd and a Pet Counselor. Feel free to say Hi and come chat sometime!)

i would like to thank eric for posting this flyer. i am going to try and attend this event. Also would like to thank Eric and Aj for how they handled the way this topic started to go. I am sure no one meant for it to sound too negative but things can be taken out of context very easily. I feel this thread was beening moderated without a corporate attitude like some other forums. Which is a totaly different discussion. Thanks again.

Had a nice conversation with Brandon this morning about the workshop.
The initial workshop will focus on the basics of setting up a saltwater tank, i.e. paramaters, mixing, filtration, etc. for a basic fish only system and he would like flyers to hand out.
He is planning a secondary workshop shortly afterwards that will focus more on simpler reefs with discussions about lighting, corals, etc.  He may need some examples for the secondary workshop such as frag displays.
If anyone is in the area, I would invite them to stop in and take a look around.  The tanks are looking much better than they have in the past!  Fish appear healthy and there's a selection of soft corals in stock.
