    Upgrade,
Going from a 180 gallon to a 250 gallon tank. Need options on how deep of a sand bed should I go with? I have a shallow bed now but not happy. And next question is what kind of sand should I go with and why.? Opinions welcome.

I think it's all just opinions really. I like a shallow sand beds and I also like aragonite. Bare bottoms are nice as well

I've been sold on shallow sand beds. I would go bare bottom, but I don't like the look. I want to keep least amount of fish poo in my tank as possible. The deep sand bed theory doesn't really have me convinced, and I think it just accumulates rotting debris. Plenty of live rock should do the same thing a DSB is supposed to do anyway.

Its all about your preference and how you want to maintain the tank.

    Three options.
    Deep Bed
    Shallow Bed
    No Bed

Bare bottom for me. I wish I would have put down star board. When I do a sand bed I always do shallow. If you do a sand bed load up on sand sifters. When I removed my sand bed on my 120 I was amazed at the amount of crap that was in there.
If you like certain wrasses, or mandarin or any sand loving animals that will make your decision for you.

I like Lots of flow another reason for no sand. I got sick of blowing of corals and rock every day.
