I was heading through Des Moines today and decided to stop buy seascapes just for the heck of it. Is it just me, or do they treat everyone like crap in there? I am a retail manager, so I think I know a little something about customer service. My wife and I were in there for almost 30 minutes and walked by 4 different employees and not one even acknowledged our presence. In fact most of them just turned their backs to us. i wanted to ask them a question about one of the tangs in their display, so I walked up to 2 of them at the desk(they didn't even look at me). I asked if the one tang was a hybrid or something else, after about 30 seconds of silence one finally looked up and said "its not a hybrid" then after another 20 seconds of silence said, "its a thompson tang". Regardless of the fact that they really don't have much in there worth buying I doubt I'll ever set foot in there again.

I am sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience at Seascapes. I have been going there for over 10 years and although certain employees over the years weren't my favorites I have never experienced what you did.
Actually with their strong support for the club posting all of our events, telling people about the club and organizing group buys they are tops in my book. No other store in the state has been wiling to do that lately. That doesn't excuse any bad service but it maybe gains them opportunity for a second chance.
We are on the verge of putting together a group buy on salt with them. The price will be a little higher than last fall but should still be a great deal. Maybe you can take advantage of this if you come back to town to see relatives. I have also taken advantage of ordering many livestock items getting prices real close if not better than the web. Plus I get to support a local business that have become good friends of mine and GIRS. They are the only place I get livestock besides members and clean up crew group buys.

I've never been to Seascapes, but I wouldn't judge any place on one experience. Any place can have an off day.

Case in point, Outback is one of my favorite restaurants... 95% of the time the food there is great and the service is awesome. However, there been a few times when it has been less than stellar. Had my first visit fallen into that "5%" and I never went back, I would have missed the other 95%! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

I agree that it could have been a rare experience. In fact I hope it was. I was just looking for feedback to determine if that really was the case, and it sounds like it was just an off day, which is good to hear. I know it is a fairly rare experience to get a lfs to support a club, so the fact that they help GIRS out shows me that they can't be all bad.

I have been to seascapes many time and have purchased from them many times.... In the past there have been some questionable employees but as of now all have been very helpful. Sorry about your bad experience. I hope this one instance doesn't stop you from going back.

I have to admit that they do have less than stellar customer service. And I have been there many times. The only person I like to deal with there is Tim.

tim, thanks for addressing it personally. It says a lot about a store when they can say they weren't on their game. Everyone has off days, and that's why I posted to see if that was the case. In my mind its all done and over with, and I son't let one bad day stop me from coming back. Hope your hand heals up soon.

Thanks for addressing this Tim. It's nice to know that you guys care about giving good customer service and that you'll be looking into things. I've never had the opportunity to get to your store, but I look forward to next time I get to DSM. Also, I wanted to thank you for the great deals that you get for club members. I hope that the foot traffic and positive word of mouth referrals that you get from members makes this a mutually beneficial arrangement.

I think every LFS that I've been to have had 3 kinds of employees: 1) the ones who love the hobby and have a willingness to help, 2) the ones who are clueless but very willing to help, and 3) the ones who just work there and could care less. It's always pretty obvious how to categorize an employee. But, as long as a LFS has good lviestock, reasonable prices, and at least a few good/knowledgeable/helpful employees, they're worth a return trip. I would definitely rate Seascapes as worth a return trip. During my one and only trip to Seascapes I spent quite a bit of time talking to Tim - super guy / very knowledgeable / very friendly / etc. I'd be confident buying livestock and returning on a regular basis (too bad I live so far away).
