I've never been involved in a group buy there and I've never had a discount there and I've been going in there off and on for over 14 years. I bought my first tank and setup from them. I could go on and on but there is no point. Sounds like unless you get Tim or Scott you are SOL and yes, they certainly deserve a day off but they need to have someone in there that can take over if they aren't available. Not being willing to feed a fish is unacceptable, a customer having to search all over for someone to help numerous times is unacceptable, dead fish happen but starving fish don't need to happen, half dead or dying corals covered with bryoposis sp?? don't need to happen.

There is a "help wanted" sign for the fish area up right now. Maybe you could appy and be thier new expert! Clearly they must be aware or that sin wouldnt be hanging there. Sorry you missed out on group buys and never gotten discounts or asked tim to order something from there suppliers w no shipping charge for you, but he has for me and other members and will continue to until they read posts like this. they will tell GIRS to kick rocks and this club needs ppl like the LFS to support us to do frag fests' and all the other behind the scences stuff these guys do to keep the club alive.

Tim and Scott are the chiefs and the others are the indians, cant be all chiefs. besides its Iowa Pet Foods and Aquatics. Adams is a LFM only with 5 bags of dogs food that are marked up 5x higher than petco. Ask Adam to sponsor us or do a group salt deal for us or discount a percentage for members.... oh wait, we tried and got denied. I go to adams to and its the same thing, if Adam or his wife arent therre, might as well not buy from them either huh???

As far as dead fish.... we are taking fish from the Ocean and bringing them to freaking Iowa for christ sake, of course some will die. same for corals.... its the name of the hobby. We all hate to see it but it happens. I could pick apart anything and everything too if I chose to but try being a bit more understanding and optimistic and lets let them know in a way they will work on correcting it, "like the help wanted sign", instead of bashing them on a site they sponsor bcuz thats an easy way to get them to back out. Your 20$ membership fee helps sure, but what they do and provide is alot lot more.

You all are entitled to our own opinions but for those who have been around for a while knows, they do their best and all they can to help us... my two cents...

Take a chill pill.  There have been to many people express the same experience so if you have an "in" and your experience is good...great.
I walk in as a customer...period.  I should not have to be part of any special group to be treated as a customer willing to spend money.  I probably could have financed their new fish room with the $ I've spent in this hobby.
I wasn't picking apart anything...I expressed an observation and a thought that I'm not ok with and I am NOT ok with poor customer service.  That is mainly what this post is about.  Maybe you should read back.
Oh, and I have been around for a while.

I don't kno why ur quoting me Irish like I was talkibg to just you or attacking you. I was stating my opinion and my experiences. I don't kno Tim or Scott thru GIRS, I know them from going in there all the time.

I don't need a "chill pill" or anything for that matter. I'm fine. Everybody was stating thier negative opinion so I put in my positive. When you go into any store for that matter, your not the only customer there and they do have other ppl to help and I think they do thier best.

Again you all may be right w ur bad times there but instead of bashing em, let's say here's what you can do to improve your business and increase revenue. Just like anywhere the regulars get a Little extra attention but they have a full store to attend to and maintain and they are short staffed right now.

I was making the point to the out of town folks who stop in once every month or two and had a bad experience, you cannot judge the store as a whole based off that. Sugar goes further than fire and may help improve things.

I Guess outa town" Folks" can't have an opinion. That's to bad
"I hope things changes at seascapes" that's really all I was trying to say in my posts not "bashing" just the truth.
"Can't we all just get along" LOL

I dont think it should matter how many times one person goes in there a month, It's the number of bad experiences ppl have had in total. I too have been in there a few times and both times i had to track someone down to help me after waiting by the coral i wanted for a half hour. The last time i was in there I was the only person in the fish area and i still had to ask for help! I dont have anything against the store or its owner just the people they decide to hire. there is one guy in there that walked by me about 5 times and didnt say anything so i just figured he was a customer until i asked for help and he was the one to help me. I asked him how much the frags were and he told me between 23-50 dollars, when i asked him about the one i wanted he told me 130. I guess what im saying is that they should be more strict with there employees, if i were to treat the customers at some of my jobs in the past like that i guarentee I would have been fired on the spot, or at least given a warning or something.
btw I really wish i did live closer I would apply there in a heartbeat, I would take a pay decrease to do something that i love to do.

Well, here is the stink. I lived in Des Moines at one time; before any of this major depression we are supposedly in now. Service was no different then as it is now. I still go to Des Moines regularly, stop in just about every shop i can when i am in town. There has been mulple times over several years that i have been ready to buy a fish; cash in hand; and get little to no service and walk out empty handed. I feel that there is a major lack of empowered employees for the fish department. And a major short fall in help when they did call someone for answers. Once again i felt shafted as an educated buyer, when they try to pass non informational tid bits with a twist of attitude. (sounds kind of like a used car dealer!)
I just don't understand why they didn't care to take a minor step (in my opinioin) to take my money and let me leave with fish, rock, and supplies i wanted. This is not about being a sponser or not. And has nothing to do with group buys. Even if it was, if it wasn't for my honesty when i went in and bought a box of salt, seascapes rang it up wrong at $15 rather than the $40 or $50 it was supposed to be.
In the end, i appreciate sponsers of our group. I love local shops because you can see that product and livestock first hand. You may even learn a thing or two. I would rather support someone local than someone out of state. But, business is business and some do business better than others. That is my opinion.

Perhaps the most effective way to get my feelings through would be to write a letter to seascapes. Which i will do. I have already started something more that i thought i would have. And spent more time typing than it is worth.

I'm glad some have had positive experiences there. And I hope they really listen to the people here, that I'm sure will relay this information to them. I wish them the best. But at this time, their best won't do for me. I'll spend my money some place else.

Ps.... The Letter thing mcclandy, I think that is a good idea and a great way to get positive results and actual changes vs. some of the posts on here. I bet that will go strait in the hands of the owner and the person whos pocket money is coming out of due to some of ppls bad experiences. If you want results and changes, there is a way to do it and get your results and if any of you are self employed or small business owners youd agree.

I think they are aware they are short staffed and have an open position in the fish area only. Scott has one of the biggest, baddest tanks in Iowa and he is as big of reef and saltwater guru as anybody so him being the owner and also a hobbyist himself, he will appreciate ppls opinions and what he can do to help his store and business. I just think it needs done in a way that isnt insulting or it will most likely get brushed off.

We are all here for the same reason and go there for the same reason so altho we have conflicting experiences and different ways to channel our opinions, at the end of the day we all just want a piece of ocean in the middle of our living room 1000 miles away from where it came from. My point is we NEED seascapes and local stores to help us accomplish that.

I dont care if you live 10 minutes or 2 hours from seascapes, at 2pm on friday afternoon your return pump goes out and Dr. Foster & Smith or wherever cant have it to you till monday, I bet each and every one of you would go to Seascapes to get your pump. Hope everybody has a wonderful evening and I hope it all works out for everybody.

I usually have no problem but I would rather deal with Tim sense it is someone I know and I can trust. It was the same way when I lived in Cedar Rapids and went to Pets Playhouse. If Nick was not working I typically did not buy anything just looked.

    Hey JTown,
Have you thought about joining our club? It sounds like you have a lot of enthusiasm and we can always use more people like that. Hopefully you can make it to some club events in the future as well.
    Joe
Yeah I need to repay my dues for this year. I paid my dues last year when I first joined and as Joel said took a brief break (thanks for letting ppl kno Joel) and need to get on paypal to pay my dues again for this year. I am very supportive of this club and all it offers so the $20 fee pays itself back times 100 with knowledge learned/shared and all the awesome deals and hook ups that come along with it.
Ill conquer paypal this wkend and pay it forth. II cant even remember all the cheap frags I got from member and cool ppl I met over the last couple years. Thats why when I took my break and tore my sps tank down, I repaid the favor and the ppl I hooked up havnt forgoten that and are fragging me off some pieces of my prized colonies as we speak. **** gabzac aka Tony gave me 100$ worth of free stuff in frags and corals to repay the favor when I hooked him up at tear down time.
What goes around comes around and this thread is a good example of that. I was in seascapes today and Tim took great care of me. Spent a solid 30 minutes just giving advise and helping me plan for my new biocube im setting up. Ill tell u one thing is we need to make it more constructive and positive bcuz if/when scott reads this he may just tell GIRS see ya and not continue to support and help the club out.
That was my point in all this, lets keep it positive and provide solutions and ideas instead of just bitching and crying about it. We start losing sponsors are the members going to fork up more money for thier membership to make up for lost sponsors? DOUBT IT!!! GIRS has come a long way when I joined there were half the members thee are now. But out of those members we cant contibute and have the resources out local stores have. Im a life long customer and always will be. Thanks for the hook up and help today Tim. Always appreciated. Ill see you tomoro for my Acans we picked out. Dont let anybody snipe me and take them lol.

TO THE MODS.... I know some may not like it but I think it may be a good Idea to delete this thread. ppl spoke thier minds and its over now. I do recommend it goes away before Scott reads it tho bcuz I have a very good hunch we could lose a valuable sponsor. Just my FYI and take it for what its worth but consider it please. PPL are going to do what thier going to do and we all stated out opinions and ppl said what thery are going to do. Lets put this in the past and make it go away. Trust me! I highly recommend it gets taken down or we could be losing a sponsor very soon. I know if I was the owner and I got back from vacation and read all this Id contact the mods and end the sponsorship on the spot. Belive me or not but if this is still here next week, id consider Seascapes a gonner. I will always be a customer and be treated fair so personally its not going to affect me but this club has meaning to me and I want to see it keep going forward, not take a step back. Sponsors and funding are HARD HARD HARD to find.... lets not let thise guys go.... Just my 2 cent but my 2 cents are good as 20000 cents in regards to this. Everybody spoke thier mind. seascapes is aware and will be doing more to improve and take the constuctive comments to make changes but lets not lose em guys. think about it and do what u think is best,,,,, take my work tho.... its a very Very good idea to just delete the thread all together....
