No idea if you guys have heard anything about this but within the last week, we've had 5 shark attacks.  All are seperate involving snorkelers.  4 injured and the one that got hit 2 days ago died quickly.  They have completely shut down the water except for commercial ships (of course) and boats looking for the sharks.  One of MANY stories on the attacks are here http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/12/05/egypt.shark.attack/index.html?hpt=C2

If you want to know more, google Sharm El Shiekh Shark Attacks and all sorts of things pop up!

The article says divers recently saw dead sheep floating in the water which would explain why these animals were in the state that they were in.  I've swam with sharks before and had no problems, but there weren't bloody carcases in the water at the time either. And the Oceanic White Tips are the sharks that first show up to ship wrecks. They have an amazing ability to sense blood in the water from a long distance away.

I remember from when I was there, there were reports of cargo ships dumping carcassas in the water. Did they close down SouthCamp beach too?

yeah they have closed the South Camp Beach down for now. They have brought in 4 US specialist (Ministry of Tourism has) to help assist them. It's rather quiet when you look toward the water right now. There are hardly any boats and the ones you see are the glass bottom boats looking for the sharks.

Read an article yesterday that a diver took a photo of the whitetip shark swimming around the snorklers right before it attacked. He took a pic of it and it shows a "crimp" in the tale of the shark which suggests that it's tail might be broken. This could hamper it's ability to catch normal prey, thus causing it to go after the easier, slow moving humans. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

You are missing out! When divers see sharks they jump *in* the water, not out! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

eh..you should hear all the conspiracy going around. I saw an article on Foxnews that the South Sinai Governor believes that Israel is behind the attacks. I read another that a captain of a boat thinks that Israel attached GPS devices to the sharks and are controlling them to attack tourists. *Sigh* Only a government official would ever think of the first one.
