I've decided to set up a 20g QT and would like all the advice or time tested methods you all have used. (equipment, salinity, time for treatments, etc)  Much appreciated!

I don't have pics. But I use a 55 gallon tank from wal-mart, t-5 lights, heater, bare bottem, pvc pipes for hiding spots, a Koralia powerhead, and a magnum canister filter. I always have a blue floss filter soaking in my sump. When it comes time to QT I use that floss filter as the 'media' in the canister filter. I don't run carbon in my canister filter as you might expect. I also use a hang on TLF carbon reactor.

I just use water from my main system. Keep the salinity normal (unless you have ich). I have never really had to treat anything. But QT is not just for treating sick fish. Most of the time I use the QT as a place for new fish to chill before they are introduced to the DT. They need to rest up and get strong for the big day. Once in the DT they have to find a hiding spot, food, AND fight off all the bullies.

Good info Jim and Craig! Using hyposalinity for treating ich can work but it is a delicate and time intensive treatment. I wouldn't/don't do hypo if my fish don't show any signs of ich. As Jim said, a QT/hospital tank is a necessity IMO as every fish undergoes stress when removed from their environment. Keeping it/them in an environment where they are (relatively) stress free provides time for them to adapt to many things: the caretaker/you, different water chemistry and food, traffic in the room where kept, etc... and, to fatten it up and to gain strength as it is not uncommon to go into hiding and be pestered/bullied by other tankmates. It also allows you to observe the fish for not only any warning signs but to learn your fish's behaviors...observation is an importatnt part of reefkeeping ;-0) I will not light the tank for several hours or a day (just use ambient lighting) to help with settling in. You're on the right track by having a QT/hospital tank! :) Good luck!!
