all- I installed a brs single reactor for my phosguard a couple days ago. Now I can't get my skimmer dialed in consistently. Woke up this morning to an overflowing skimmer and salt spray everywhere. When I went to bed the skimmer was ok. Before the reactor went it, the skimmer was set for 2 weeks without having to be adjusted. I am tempted to remove the reactor and throw a bag of phosguard in instead....

    any ideas???

    thanks!

Has anything else in the tank changed? When I add something or something else gets in the water I either have to turn my down or off for at least a day. Ex...epoxied all my new frags yesterday from the fest and skimmer is off or it would be going hay wire last night and today.

Is the skimmer new? Or new to you and your system? You may have to start with it set very low and slowly (over a couple weeks) get it dialed up correctly.

Skimmer is used and about 6 months old but new to me. Only thing new was adding the reactor. I dialed it back this morning. I guess I need to be patient and see how it does. Hope it didn't overflow while I am at work.

When I clean my skimmer and put the top back I have the same problem of it going crazy. Do other people have to turn theirs down and adjust every time they clean theirs? Sorry for hijacking this just a little bit : ) Overflowing from skimmers is such a mess to deal with!

Nope i just clean mine throw it back on and she works perfect.

As for adding a reactor maybe some particals got out into the tank and made it over skim trying to get it out? What were you useing in the reactor?

My skimmer always throws a fit after a water change. Don't know why but it does as you say. The morning after a water change it is overflowing. I open the valve and by evening I have to close it down. Doesn't seem like a major problem with it being an internal.

To add, I shut the skimmer down durring water change. When I clean the collection cup I leave it running and let it flow out.

@Maureen@Maureen did you power down the skimmer when cleaning?@violet21chewy did you power the skimmer off during the reactor install?

I turn it down when I clean it if it is flowing up into the cup. then I wipe it out with a cloth and take the collection cup into the bathroom and clean it out with water, dry it and put it back on and turn it back to what it was. I told myself maybe it was overflowing because the sides were smooth and clean and it allows it to travel up easier but I really don't think it should over flow a gallon container when it does it. It will act fine at first, bubbles coming up at a slow steady amount but no water and I will walk away come back some time later when I hear a noise and the noise is it going nuts overflowing or sometimes it is not water but so many bubbles it is popping the cap up a little and misting. Maybe I should just shut it off to clean it, then, turn it back on and let it flow awhile before putting the collection cup back on?

Could it be the brand of skimmer? Are you dosing bacteria or anything else?

I always clean out my collection cups for my Reef Octopus skimmers and slap them back on, haven't had to touch the dial on my skimmer in several months, and don't really have any issues with overflow.

I have a Super Reef Octopus 2000. I am not adding anything to my tank. Guess I will just keep trying things until something works consistently.

maybe try dialing it way down for a bit to see if that helps with the overflow and if so, what kind of skimmate you get with it.

Is the water coming out of reactor close to skimmer intake? Maybe try to direct flow away from skimmer.

I did notice a fine red haze from the phosguard. maybe that is causing it to over foam? the skimmer is in a different chamber from the reactor. anxious to get home so I can see what it did. the skimmer is an aquamaxx conesC01.

Well if your skimate is the reddish color then you know some of the media got out into the tank and the skimmer is pulling it out. Thats what happened to me when i was stupid and turned the reactoron with carbon and didnt rinse it out first ha my tank was black for a hour and my skimmate was black black black

@Fence13@Fence13 when it is not flowing into the collection cup and just building up on the sides it is a light brown. I have a HOB octopus on my JBJ 28 nano and it gets dark brown liquid in it like a coffee or tea plus the dark build up. The one on my 120 is lighter and the liquid from it is lighter too, more like diluted tea.

I would say the media is causing it. I would dial it back and see if it settles down after a couple days.
Mine will sometimes overflow after I clean it and do a water change, but not as often as it used to. I never did figure out exactly what was causing it.
It also seems like once it starts going nuts and overflowing it won't stop on its own. I don't know if the skim mate in the water keeps everything going nuts, but I have to empty the cup and dial it way down, let things settle down and work it back up slowly as the bubble height returns to normal. Kind of a pain in the ***.

If you are getting a red dusting better slow your tumble on your reactor and check top sponge to make sure it isn't out of position and letting go particles out. The gfo should just have a slow simmer on top or you will grind it to dust.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think will slow down the reactor!
