Need some opinions, I am trying to set up a more energy efficient system, I was thinking of changing to an Octopus Extreme Series EXT-200 skimmer that runs a very efficient pump, (now I have a AquaC EV-240 powered by a MAG 24)
The whole idea being that I can then change my system pump to something much more efficient than my MAG Drive 24 I am currently running to power both my skimmer and my overflows.  Any thoughts?  and/or suggestions?
    Are the two skimmers comparable?

so let me get this strait, your wanting to replace 1 pump with 2 and save energy? why does that not add up to me???? /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif sorry brandon had to poke. i would suggest keeping your setup as is and maybe look at a more friendly external pump. Maybe a Velocity pump or something. I'm not sure if they have the output thought that you want. But from my understanding they are very efficient and small and quiet.

Well the mag drive 24 is a power hungry 265 Watts - one pump for my whole system
The Octupus Skimmer is 30 Watt and I can get an external with the flow I want for around 100 watts all = 130 watts.
I would like to get a reeflo dart and keep my existing setup but From my understanding the dart isn't pressure rated and will not power my current skimmer. The easiest would be to change the pump but I have been told that my AquaC needs a pressure rated pump as mentioned the dart is not..

Too bad...I got two Darts I'm selling for $150 each...but you're right...it does look like for your skimmer that it wants a pressure rated pump...and the dart is not that.  It will give you a heck of a lot of flow, but not pressure rated.
It does look like your Mag 24 is over-driving your skimmer and that you could get by with a smaller pump like a 12 or 18.  Something to consider.
When you get into the pressure rated Reeflo pumps, then you're really not going to end up saving much as far as energy consumption goes (maybe 50 watts).  The fact is, your AquaC skimmer just requires a hog of a pump...so if you want to keep it, live with the electricity requirements.  If you want to save money on your electrical bill, maybe you're right  and maybe the new skimmer is the best option.

true the way of the octopus does add up better. but what makes a pressure "rated" pump different from another one? i mean if your only pumping like 3ft or so like you would be brandon, i dont see why a pressure rated pump would be necessary. now if you had an extremely high head height then i can see a pressure pump. but that is something i never understood. My MRC skimmer supposedly needs a pressure pump too, i'm using a dolphin on it hope it works not sure if my pump is pressure rated or not.

But as far as topic goes. the numbers do add up to help save electricity if you go octopus. and may help bring your heater usage down too /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif haha

Whats your total gallons and what is your bio load? The Otc X's are awesome skimmers, They come with the Sicce Pumps which are the best pumps for the money when it comes to small to medium size skimmers. Then you step up to the Askrol Pumps for medium to large, and then the Dart needle wheel pumps on the High end!
It will definitely be an improvement over the set up you have now, as far as power goes. You should even get better performance over the skimmer you have now, With the skimmer you are currently using the pump must push a ton of water to produce the fine bubbles, that water creates lots of turbulence in the chamber and an unstable head of foam. with the OC-X the pumps are only pushing a fraction of the water to create the fine bubbles, thus less turbulence and a more stable head of foam and thus more skimmate. Does that make sense to you!
Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

All very good info.... thanks. Just have to make the decision. I am really leaning to a new skimmer and new return pump, I like my current set up but in the end I think I will be better off with the lower power requirement.

I agree on the new skimmer and return pump...and let's face it, getting new toys is fun! :)
