OK, so I'm looking for a skimmer and just about everything out there will not fit in my sump. I have a seaclear 65 gallon that I'm using and the openings at the top are only 7" wide. the average base for a skimmer rated for around 200 gallons is about 8" at the smallest.

I didn't forsee this when setting up the tank. (Doh!) Can I just cut back the opening an inch or so? if I fish the shavings out (pump turned off) should everything be OK?

Cut back what opening? Your stand? or are you talking the top of the sump?

You have any pics of the sump.
It might be something to look at just making a new sump customized to your needs.

You can kind of see them in this pic. Ther acrylic comes over the top and has 2 7 in opening.

I would comsider something else, but I have to put the stand down over this tank. It ain't coming out. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/crazy.gif

I would think you can cut some of the bracing out to make a skimmer fit. I assume you won't be running the sump full so all the bracing shouldn't be necessary. I would get a second opinion before making any cuts though.

Another thing I would consider is modifying the stand for easier access. Put an upright leg on the front side corners, then clear out the front except a single 2x4 center brace. That 2x6 on the top edge is plenty strong, no need for all the extra upright legs across the front.

Well, I didn't get a second opinion. I hacked the thing. And I decided to grab this Eshopps S-200 skimmer that I could get locally for $100-$200 less than online. Not sure why, but it should do the trick, I suppose.

Here's a picture of the hack job I did on the sump to get enough space for the thing. i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a401/t...094118.jpg

Wish I could put the pic in the post, but I don't know what happened to that option...
