I received a new Reef Octopus NWB-110 skimmer for Christmas and I thought I had done all of the measurements and it would fit in my sump....

Apparently I didn't quite measure correctly as I am about an inch short. It is currently a 10 gallon sump separated into three compartments(overflow, refugium, and return). I cant easily buy a bigger sump as I am limited to a 20"x18" footprint for the stand/tank. I suppose the easiest thing might be to make another sump with a larger center compartment. Before I do that does anyone have any ideas on how to make this thing fit?

That sucks, sorry about that. Always hard to measure stuff out exactly without the equipment sitting right there in front of you. I assume it doesn't fit into any section? If it doesn't fit I can't think of anything you can do, but move a baffle in the sump, or get a different skimmer. There really isn't a way that I know of to modify the skimmer to have a smaller footprint.

get rid of the refugium area is my suggestion. In a sump that small I can not imagine it would be much use to begin with. If it is for a space to give pods a place to grow, you can get a HoB fuge.

Could you remove the baffle between the first and second chamber? Or reposition the baffle.

The plan was already to get rid of the refugium section and replace it with the skimmer. However, I didn't want to remove the baffle between the fuge and overflow section if I could help it. Are there any foreseeable problems with just knocking this baffle out?
As it stands now the refugium has some red gracillaria, chaeto, and a DIY upflow algae scrubber. It seems to be fairly effective at nutrient export as I remove about 2 handfuls of stuff a week from it. That combined with weekly water changes keeps me at undetectable levels of nitrate.

shouldnt be an issue. i have redone my 10g sump a few times. it may not be a bad idea to build a new one. and just swap it with the old. it might be tough to silicone new baffles if the sump isnt completely dry
