So, in working on my latest build, I have been thinking about and addressing a lot of the flaws and shortcomings that my old systems (and i believe many reefers) have had with tank maintenance and effencicy.  This has included an open sump room layout to ease maintenance tasks as well as addressing some different ways to automate, selecting different equipment for the job, and just exploring for the balance of low work, high delivery.  I figured I would get some thoughts on here, see what you guys think in regards to skimmers.
1- I love beckett skimmers for power.  I have run a Bullet II since 2005 ish???
2- I hate the speed that the neck gums up, which adds to the constant tweaking of skimate levels.  The needle wheels are sweeping in this catagory.  I am not looking for a set and forget device.. but something more balanced
3- i personally run bare-bottom in the main tank, and want a higher efficiency in skimmer (with wetter than average skimming ability)
    So, questions..
Does any one here have experience with the Wet Neck style of skimmer?   I have found the idea to be very intriguing at removing the buildup on the neck, but have only found a few scattered threads and mentions of it here and there.... not enough to see actual data or discussed enough to have a "decided" outcome.   a good thread is RIGHT HERE.  (see post #24) I am considering looking into this for my bullet 2.   Am I missing any resources?    Why is something with this much potential not common knowlege?????
Secondly,   does (for a 180 display, 300 gallon system) it make more sense to sell what I have and move to a skimmer with a better length of time between cleanings???  The general consensus I have gotten is I would have to have an incredibly large needle-wheel to get in the same ballpark of performance.

BTW..  I am also convinced that having wipers in necks of skimmers hurts performance, and creates more surface area to build up gunk on....

Matt Im not familer with the wet neck cups, but I am a big fan of wet skimming. I dump my catch tank (1 1/2g) every 2 days. I clean my cup once every 2 weeks.

I skim about where you do then :)

well. the Wet Neck creates a very thin waterfall on the rise tube of the skimmer... just enough to lubricate it so that the skim has less friction, and therefore sticks less. the comparison is a water slide that is wet slides easier.

I am more interested in the reduced care of cleaning and more consistant adjustment heights than the 10-20% rumored improvment...

B-Rad, you also have a needle Wheel.. Beckets mud up a LOT faster...

I could possibly swith to a needle wheel if I decide I can get good enough performance for the right price.. plus the electricity is a tad cheaper...
