Do not fear friends! The eels are fine! But I am in a bit of a predicament...
Long story short, I made the assumption that they couldn't get through the TEETH of my overflow. GUESS AGAIN! My girlfriend called me in the middle of class panicked that an eel was swimming in the sump. She was too afraid to grab it out so I had to come home. Any ideas on how to keep these guys out of the sump? Literally the only space they can get through is the teeth of the overflow. I will put some pics of the empty tank here so you all can get an idea of what it looks like!
The eels are currently happily amongst their rocks "peeking" out as they always do... just in case you all were wondering!
Below is the best pic I have. Of course it doesn;t show the teeth at all... I am sure most of you have seen a tank like this. The teeth go all the way to the top eurobracing.

Some nylon screen works well, at least in keeping small fish out but should work for your eels. Shaun

I was thinking of something like that I just don't know how to attach it?

Hmm that's an idea. That also means this mod would be permanent though? Not sure how I can go about getting that area dry enough for long enough for the glue to set.

I think zip ties with some kind of mesh/screen would do the trick.

A fine idea! I have a ton of zip ties. Surprised I didn't think of this! I think I will give gutterguard a shot. Wonder how badly it will reduce my flow...

How wide is the in between the teeth? Isn't it only like 5mm? How big of eel?

Nylon screen is going to be a PITA. You are going to have to clean it frequently, if not your gonna have a mess.

Are you sure it fit through those teeth?? Man, it just doesn't seem possible unless the eel is pretty small but then again they are sneaky lil' buggers.

I saw the eels...they are not small so if they can get thru those overflow teeth they can get thru anything. The plastic gutter guard with holes might work if you could figure out how to put it on an angle to the overflow but out of the water...so it gives you more space between the gutter guard and the actual overflow. Not sure how to explain what I'm thinking.

OR there is a plastic mesh that I cannot find a pic of right now. That would work great to let water thru but not the eels. I will see if I can find it and post.

So I used the mesh. I sorta did it on the inside of the teeth at an angle like you said Phyllis. I tripled the mesh up. I am pretty sure the eels were getting through the teeth. One of them was in the overflow itself and the other was in the sump again when I got home from work. Right now there is no way I can imagine these things getting though. I can see how it might get dirty quick. There is little light getting into the overflow (I painted the lid dark blue) so hopefully there won't be too much crap growing on it. I guess I can make it part of my weekly maintenance to blow it off so long as the eels stay safe /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

These suckers don't cease to amaze me. Even with the mesh one of them made it through. The kicker is that it came back into the display tank while I was fiddling with the ladder to be able to get at it. Unfortunatley I didn't see the prison break just saw they were both happily in their cave at one point. I need more ideas!!!
