With all the storms rolling over the past 24 hrs what do you have to protect your investment in the event of a short or long term power outage?
I run my return pump and head unit for my controller on a UPS backup, this will provide automatic short term power to the critical life support of my system (my return pump) and will send a e-mail to my phone the second a power failure, water level, ph or temp go out of a set range. My UPS provides about 45min of run time. (In the 12 years I've lived in the area we have had 1 power outage longer than this during the floods of '08) but in the event one does occur again I also have a portable generator that is capable of running the entire system indefinitely until power is restored. I fire it up about twice a year and put a small load on it to make sure that it will be in good working order when I need it.
    So what's your plan?

I know many have way to much money in their systems to risk it on power outages. Its not a matter of if, but when, it will happen. Everybody should have a plan. I mainly have a generator for my sump pump, but it has saved my tank a few times already along with the basement.

I have a UPS backup on my Apex so it can send one last SOS email to tell me that my system shut down and the power is out.

I have two vortech battery backups to power 4 vortex for 18 hours.

And I have a small generator. Which I just tested. Thanks for this post!

6500 watt generator, that is connected to a 220v plug in garage. All I have to do is switch the main breaker over to secondary, and it powers my tank, tv, refrigerator and microwave /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif and a branch circuit for lights /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif whoooop!

my truck has a power inverter. If worse comes to worse that will provide some circulation to get me by.

i think return pumps have first priority, then temp is right after.

    The big three would be

    1. water circulation (whether from the return pump or your power heads)
    2. temperature
    3. air (good idea to throw in an air stone during a power outage if you can)

Or your whole tank with a generator /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/tongue.gif

Power inverter that we'll hook up to the SUV's battery, if an outage was longer than 6 or so hours, never had to use it yet though. Otherwise I have a handful of battery operated pumps just to move the water around a bit if its a shorter term outage.

That generator sounds like a good idea. But for now I will just hope power isn't out long. LOL

Oxygenation would be your first priority then heating, the problem with heaters is that they use a lot of power and most UPS's would not be able to power them long enough to provide much of a benefit during a power outage.  A generator is cheaper to purchase than a very large UPS and will run indefinitely.
(assuming you have gas for it)[IMG]
But I'm glad to see that many have protection in place should it be needed.

It's not necessarily the weather you have to worry about... Check this out
Some retard smoked a telephone poll down by my house 6 months ago, and power was out for 7 hours, so I kicked my generator on like nothing had happened..
Sometimes tho, and most often it's the weather. That's what insurance is for tho /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif. Remember the ice storm we had a few years back? We were without power for almost two days. Thank goodness I didn't have a tank then, but that's what got us to buy the generator. Once you have one, a big weight feels like its been lifted off your shoulders

If you don't want to purchase a generator small inverters that you can plug into your cars cigarette lighter are pretty cheap insurance.  I forgot I had one of those as well that we used to plug our laptop into on road trips.

I built my own out of a standard car battery that charges itself when power is on and swaps back and fourth about as instant as can be. It can run most of my circulation stuff for around 12 hours but if it were to happen i would run them every so often and shut them down if it seemed like an ice storm type of thing and it was going to be 24+ hours. Plus can always grab another car battery quick to for more time if needed. Cheap solution for the price of a car battery and about 14 dollars in components I needed.

I'm interested as well.... Even tho I have a generator, just curious how you make this work? I guess some pumps are 12 volt, so I can see that being an easy connection. What's about 120v, do you use step-up transformers???
