as you know were moving.. currently have a 125 set up no sump tomorrow im picking up a 225 with a sump and setting it up at the new house. we dont need to have our current tank out of this place until dec 15th so id like to get the 225 set up and ready to go before i move all my livstock over. so i was thinking tommorrow id take out half the sand and live rock thats in my current set up and 50g of water and transfer it to the 225. fill the 225 let it cycle until dec 12 and then take the rest out of my 125 over and complete the move. am i way off ??? do i need to rinse the sand first??? the 225 was a saltwater but has been sitting dry for a 3 months now again thanks for any help

I would get fresh sand and add a couple cups of your old sand to that. I would also be sure to leak test this 225.

I think so. The nice thing about that is you will be seeding your new dead sand with your old sand and minimizing the transfer of unwanted pest that most likely is in your current sand.

meh we all have done it in one way or another. I would suggest before you do anything to double triple check any and all information you get regardless of who it is from. I mean well when I give information or try to help but there is always someone with a different take on things.

Well, I guess I'm a dipshit too. I'm actually moving to a newer larger tank as well and was not looking forward to buying a dozen bags of live sand..........again.

    Thanks for the info Mthomp!

For what it is worth, I have changed tanks 3 times and used my old sand twice. Granted I washed it 2 cups at a time with a hose and strainer till it ran clear, on the deck, took a few hours. BUT I saved 200-300 dollars. Never had a problem I used about 4 cups to "seed" my 135.

So do you leak test the 225 for any reason other then just in case? I have my 220 sitting in my basement I still have not done a leak test sense getting it to my house, but it did have water in it tell about 2 hours before we moved it.
