I have my first tank up and running and was wondering if southdown sand would be good to use in a reef tank. I would like to have a deep sand bed, but want it to be appropriate sand for the job. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks alot, Matt.

    hey Matt,

Southdown is pure arognite, but very hard to find anymore as they went out of business a few years ago. If you still have some it works very good.

    Matt,

Most of us have or have had Southdown in the past - great sand for a reef tank if you can find it as Craig said.

Only potential drawback is it's very fine in nature (like sugar) which can create a mess when initially added (referred to as the Southdown sandstorm) and that it's easy to blow around.
I've used it since I started but the ability to be easily blown around has become a nuisance for me now that my flow is greater than 50x.

That's about all I had in a 135 for over 12 years and had a very deep sandbed.  Once it settles down it's really not a problem unless your powerhead falls off the side.
Where did you find Southdown sand?  We used to get a group together and order it thru..hmmm...Home Depot I think...but you had to buy a whole pallet or more.

i've got a friend who happens to have some sitting around. he offered it to me, and I wanted to do some research on sand beds for reef tanks first. I've done tons of stuff with freshwater, but salt is still a new experience for me.
